    1979 Suzuki GS 1000 points

I posted this awhile back in the wrong forum and I was wondering if anybody has replaced the points ignition with a solid state unit? My son was looking at replacing the points soon. Thanks!

Years ago, I did that to my 78 GS750E. I put in the Dyna unit. Worked just fine. I later upgraded the coils to their units also. It has been too long to remember anything in particular on the install, but if you have patience and follow the instructions, it shouldn't be a big deal. It truly fell under the "set it, and forget it" category.

Thanks for the response. He is looking at a Dyna kit and together I hope we can figure it out.

OOOOh! Some things are coming back to me. I had the regular Dyna unit, not the Dyna "S" I believe. I don't think that was availble back then. I do remember setting it up so that the stock timing was all the way to one side of the slots on the mounting plate. That way I could advance the timing, but always be able to come back exactly to OEM if I wanted. I think I settled on 5 degrees static advance{pretty typical}, then I made a scribe line on the plate and engine case once I had it set, so I could go back and forth if needed. I can't quite remember how I was able to determine what 5 degrees was. I think there was something in the instructions that gave me a clue. Also, I think there is only about 10 degrees of total movement in the slots. Most, set the stock timing in the middle of the slots, so that would give you + or - 5 degrees of adjustment. I didn't see the need for retarding the timing, so that is why I set it at one end of the plate. I hope I don't confuse things here.

Good info,Thanks! My son is looking at Dyna S units on ebay and a couple of other online sources. It's going to be -17 degrees tonight, so I think we will wait until spring.
