Correct tach for 05 and up C50 and C90

If you have a Cobra tach part # 01-1840 installed on a 05,06 C50 or C90 it will read half of actual engine RPMs. Initially I had a Drag Specialties tach and it did the same thing, installing a single fire adaptor rendered the tach completely inoperative. This past weekend I went to a motorcycle show at the Washington DC Convention Center, I spoke with the Cobra rep and he told me that the 01-1840 tach was for a dual fire ignition and what I needed is a # 01-1841 tach, it has a circuit that makes the tach indicate the correct RPMs. The fuel injected C50 and C90 have a single fire ignition system. The 06 catalogs does not differentiate between the carbureted dual fire and the injected single fire. So, if you have a C50 or a C90 and you have a tach of any brand and it reads around 2000 RPMs at 65 MPH in 5th gear, you have the wrong tach, it should read around 3950 RPMs. Drags Specialties never answered my email, the hell with them, so I bought a Cobra tach, it cost more but they are willing to help so to me it's worth the extra cost.

Mine came in today and is being installed as we speak. I'll let all of you know how it turns out. Drag Specialties can't be that busy that don't have the time to help a customer. I'm sure I'm not the only one that had that problem with their tach, maybe they don't have a fix for it yet, they should have let me know one way or the other. The Cobra looks better than DS tach anyway.

Hey let us know how the Baron tach goes. I installed one on my C90, it read half revs so i made enquiries with Barons tech dept and they told me to get the adaptor. I installed the adaptor and the tacho went from bad to useless.

I'm still trying to get the damn thing to work! Any suggestions?

Just answered your own question. You need an adapter 2005 to present are fuel insjection and single fire. 1998 to 2004 Carbs and double fire. When I installed mind didn't work because I read the print wrong. The orange/white wire was the neg side of the coil.

If your tach is engineered for a dual fire ignition it will not work on a single fire ignition system. As I mentioned in my first post of this thread adding an adapter renders the tach completely inoperative. If your tach does not have the circuitry for a single fire ignition you'll not get it to read correctly no matter what you do. Baron should send you the correct tach for your application, if they wont get your money back and buy a Cobra tach part #01-1841, that one will work.

If you have an OEM tach for a Volusia or a C50, they are the same. The only difference is how they are wired. I guess this is a moot point as I have heard that Suzuki has quit selling this tach because of all of the problems with it (didn't always work (made in China), glass fogs, etc.). Also, I infer from this that the C50's days are numbered.

OK Richard,,,where did you get the info that the C50 days are numbered? It's one of their best selling bikes. Do you know what they plan to replace it with?

Not so Richard. The Volusia tach will not work properly on a C50. That's because the Volusia tach is engineered for a dual fire ignition, carbureted, one coil. The C50 is single fire, fuel injected, two coils.

Not sure about that one. I'd check with the dealer. If that tach was designed for a Volusia it will not work properly on a C50. Remember, the Volusia has ONE coil (dual fire ignition),dual because it fires both cyliders, the C50 has TWO coils (single fire ignition)single because each coil fires one cylinder. If you mount a dual fire ignition tach on single fire ignition bike it will indicate half of the actual RPMs. Hope that helps.

Sure does, Thanks for the response.. it says it's for the C50 so I think I am going to go for it. I really like the way it looks and mounts. Riding without a tach is a new experience for me, not a real big deal but I am really curious as to what I am turning....

Thanks again. If I do indeed go for it i'll post the outcome...

    Old thread bump

    Old thread bump

I wish PNW rider would have kept posting to the forum. I would have liked to hear how that turned out. I bought a Tachometer 990A0-72001 on Ebay from a Suzuki dealer that wanted to clear it from inventory. Needless to say, it doesn't work. I 'm trying to get an exchange for 990A0-72004.

Has anyone ever figured out what bike the 72001 tach works on?

Well I e-mailed Drag Specialties and asked about compatibility as well, and I received an e-mail telling me she had to forward my e-mail to engineering. After a week I never got a response so I e-mailed again, and was told she has not yet heard back from engineering. After another week I followed up again with no reply.

I did find out though on this forum that you do not only need the adapter, but you also need to get a resister from Radio Shack, Bed thing is I forgot to write it down so I have to find the post again,
