    2002 Volsuia Oil Change

Just got a Volusia with 2000 miles on it, but no manuals. Does anyone know the oil capacity of the VL800 with a new filter. How do ou check the level (visual)?

No Volusia here, but I think my VZ800 has the same motor. If so, the capacity is something like 2.3 quarts with filter change. There's a sight glass on the side of the motor, near the brake pedal. With the bike level, oil should be visible about halfway up.

With filter change - 3.6 US quart (3400ml)
Without filter change - 3.2 US qt (3000ml)

Don't think there's a great deal of difference between the '02 and the '05 as far as this is concerned, so...

View port for checking oil level is on the lower right hand side of the engine (sitting on the bike) about due south of the oil filler cap. There should be a high and low mark. Let the engine warm up for a couple of minutes before checking, and the bike must be upright and level. Since there is no centerstand, this might require getting someone to assist by holding the bike up straight while you squat down and look.

I can't help you with an answer (I don't know if the '05 and '02 are the exact same oil capacity) except to recommend that you go pay a dealer $5 for a manual. It is an essential item.

get yourself a telescoping mirror so you can sit on the bike and check the oil yourself.

The capacity is 3.4 quarts with filter. Make sure the bike is upright when checking oil level.

Have an 03 vol it should take about 3.5 or so in oil. Someone also gave you a great tip about the telescopic mirror to check the engine oil lever in the sight glass. Heres another tip. Take an old thick phone book place bike on it and you can check the oil level with out the assistance of another person. But I personally want to get a telescopic mirror as it is a much safer and easier way to check the oil level. Ok where do I get the Telescopic Mirror?

Bought mine at a local auto parts store (AutoZone) for 2 or 3 bucks. But I think they may sell them at some dollar stores also.

As a side note, Mr. Bunny called a reputable radio mechanic and was told that it's a good idea to put synthetic in after 1500miles.
I'm guessing that with an '02 you have more than 1500 on her.

You definitely live in a larger city than I do... our phone book's not even 1/4 inch thick
