Mustang seat did NOT work
Ok... I feel a little balance is necessary. Anyone who searches this topic would find a Mustang seat love-fest of threads. I succumbed to the hype and bought a Mustang two piece vintage wide touring seat about a year ago and found it did not work at all.
----My tailbone hit something firm thru it on bumps that did not happen with stock.
----My thighs went numb in very few miles because of the strong ridge at the sides.
----The fitment on my Kawi was marginal....the tongue that holds it down in front just barely holds when the bolt pattern at back lines up... you could easily lift up the front if you wanted.
----Mustang would NOT take it back since I had given it a few longish breakin rides..... so I ended up giving it away with the bike when I sold it.
BIG waste of money for me.
HOWEVER, what works is obviously very personal. I am only saying beware. I am a ways above 200# and a very tall person and perhaps the Mustang is great for smaller folks?

MY mustang bothered the backs of my legs alittle when I first got it. However it doesnt bother me any more so I imagine it broke in. Never ever bothered my tail bone. Fits my bike great. Something dont work for everyone they say ultimate seats are really good but ive never rode on one.

Annie, I remember looking over your thread on the Mustang seat when I was in the market for a new saddle. It was very helpful because I knew if I didn't find it comfortable right away I knew I never would regardless of break-in. I do like mine, but it is a very personal thing since no one person is identical to the next. Did you ever find a seat that worked for you?

Pheonix,
not really. I do use the Airhawk cushion now on my stock seats and that helps a huge amount. The airhawk can be moved around...rotated...removed....all those help give me long ride comfort. It think it is really about varying where the pressure points of any seat hit you.....and airhawk lets you vary that many many ways.
I have succumbed to the Russell Daylong seat hype this time and will be getting one before end of June in their schedule ... I beleive that is probably the best option out there for long term comfort... they rebuild with spring support and widen the base and I have only found very positive comments on that one. So I live in hope of getting a seat that wont require the airhawk which looks a bit dorky...LOL....

I'm still running the stock seat.
With proper position & posture, it isn't that bad...when I do go numb I keep moving and bouncing around till the feeling comes back. While not a perfect system, it seems to be working for me...and the price is perfect for me.

With ALL bike comfort mods. you never really know how it will be for you as an individual until you try it out first. I had the same situation with windshields. I bought a particular brand and size and it was fine for me and other people swore that they hated it because of wind buffeting. You just never know.
Everyone is a different height, weight, riding posture, lower back or shoulder issues and has personal preference to what is comfortble and what isn't. Some people sleep on rock hard beds at home and others can't get it soft enough. It is what it is.

Hah!!!
Thanks for that...sometimes it isn't until you see the comment later on before you realize what a dope you are.

So long as YOU knew what I meant, I'm cool.

Thanks for that info. As the Mustang love fest continues I just can't pry my wallet open far enough to pull 400+ out for a seat that I have no idea will be as comfortable as the claims. Great info! I did do a homeboy seat mod on my stock seat and so far it works very well and didn't cost me anything. You would think that manufacturers would put a comfortable seat on the bike just because they should!

The factory seats will probably fit the majority of butts without too much complaint. The difficult part is making it work with the design lines of the bike and still fit your butt.

Try a sheepskin butt pad from alaskaleather.com worked for me on a m50 stock seat. Best $40 I have spent lately.

Hi Annie,
Saw you got a new bike...again!! Good luck with it. As for Mustang seats when I had my C50 it made all the differance in the world. So about 6 months ago I ordered one for my Electra Glide. It was awful. My wife said "I want my poofy seat back" for the Harley so I returned it. It was flatter then the HD seat and with the cover I could not slide my butt around to get comfortable. Funny how when I had it on the C 50 I new it was better then the C50 one imeddiatly. On the Harley I new it was no where near the correct fit immediatley so back it went.

I did the lumectomy on my M50 stock seat, then had Mean City Cycles do a seat rebuild, then tried a corbin dual tour, none of which worked for me at all.
I then found a good deal on a Mustang Wide Tour combo, and, while it is not the heavenly perfection that I had hoped it would be, it is by far the most comfort that I have found for this bike. Interesting how, on another bike it may not work at all. For now I am thankful to be able to put an hour and a half or event 2 hours on the bike without having to get off, instead of needing to get off after 45 minutes to an hour.

I thought about a Mustang. They are reasonably priced and many riders like them. From my research the Ultimate seat seems to get the most praise. I just ordered a Danny Grey one piece for my 09 Roadliner. They are covering it in leather/with faux alligator print. I can't wait to get it. I hope it's better than the stock for comfort. I know it will be better for looks - that is for sure.

I was looking for a decent backrest to add to my stock seat and found that the best reviews came from a backrest that would be $300. After surfing around for a few more weeks I got an offer from a company to buy a new Saddlemen Explorer with a removable backrest for $448 shipped. Although I bought it, I haven't had the opportunity to install it yet but I'm looking forward to trying it out. A guy I know bought a new Vulcan 900 and put a Mustang on it and he and his wife are both very happy.
