Tallannie has gone to the Dark side
Here is my first pic of my new rear tire.... a Goodyear Assurance Tripletred... size 205/55R16.
I dont believe all the scare stories about car tires on bikes....and I only got 5600 miles outta my Metzler 880.... and dang ! it looks good !
Winter has just hit with our first snows....so I dont have any miles on it yet... just brought it home....but I will come back as I get miles on it and report on how it handles. So far it is a bit different... kinda feels like when you get a brand new front tire and all of a sudden the front end is a bit goosey ?... but I need to experiement with different tire pressures to find the 'sweet spot' and then that should go away...or so I am told.

It does look good.
I have always wondered how many miles you could get out of one.

oh snap, here comes the "car tire vs not car tire on the back of your bike" argument.
This isn't encouraging since I just bought a metzler for the front (or was it rear, dang it now I have to check) for the Concours.

Just discovered my front tire was low... May account for the mushy feel on the ride home.... Hurry up warmer weather!!!!

I like it! Now if I could just figure how to put a tire like that on my GSX.

I heard most accidents happen close to home, so I moved!

This could be really interesting ! I thought motorcycle tire design had beefed up sidewalls to handle the wear and tare of leaning into corners?
-
THey do... but most car tires are strong enough to flex the sidewall a bit in a corner without issue. This particular tire has been used on many many bikes for a zillion miles and has no problems.

checked over the weekend and sure enough, the front is a(n?) metzler 880.
Although, if memory serves, I got the front tire changed with 25 k on the bike and the rear changed with 27 k.
That means the front tire already has 5 k on it and shows little sign of wearing so far.

Jim...sounds like terrific mileage you are getting. I am envious.

took my first short ride on the new darkside tire today.... only about 50 miles but it was twisty and nice to get out... even if it was 44 degrees.. Brrrrrr.
Tire handled OK... perfectly rideable and felt good into the corners....but there is still a sense that the front wheel is a bit wobbly... and I guess I have to say it wasnt like that before... and so it must be coming from the new rear tire...??

Yes, those ARE the kind of things that happen to SOME riders on SOME bikes with SOME car tires on the rear.
Truty be known, the handling changes for everybody that does that. Some riders are just too dense to realize it.........or to stubborn to tell the truth.
I can tell the difference with a new bike tire of the same style and brand.
The question for you now is: Do you think you will be able to get comfortable and feel safe with your new handling after some practice ??
Some can, some can't and some wouldn't know it if they were riding on bare rims.
Is some extra tire mileage worth it to you if there is even a TINY chance that the different handling will cause a problem ??
It sure is NOT for me.

The last time I was in to my dealer (of motorcycles), a customer was describing loosing a tire and needing a replacement. The only one in stock was a sport bike tire. I guess it was of the right size so having no choice, he got it mounted. He said he got about 2,000 miles on it and it was finished.
Any Comments?

Yes...worth it. I am very sure I can adapt to the minor changes I am noting...no question. In a hundred miles I probably wont even be able to say why it is different. And possibly the wear on the front tire (which is pretty far gone) may be the culprit for some of this funny feel. I also have a range of different pressures to try.... and I fully intend to find the sweet spot.
