    1996 Nighthawk 250

    First bike nighthawk 250, a few ?'s

    I just got my first bike, 1996 nighthawk 250 with 3100 miles. the bike is in pretty much new condition.

    my first question is what oil should i be using?

    is the trans lubed with the engine oil or is it seperate? i see on the shifter side of the trans it has what looks like a drain plug in the center and a fill hole at the top, just like you would see in a car trans.

    also the chains was pretty darn dry when i got it. i got swome chain lube and lubed it up, a couple times as the chain seemed to soak up some of the lube. there is a little click noise every once in a while in 1st and 2nd gear, it does seem to be coming from the trans, i was thinkingthe chain needs to be replaced or just adjusted. Im not sure how lose the chain is supposed to be, right now i can grab the bottom of the chain and move it up and down about 1 1/2 inches. the rear tire adjuster has a sticker above it that says new then a space and then replace. i understand that it means if u have to adjust the chain to the replace mark its time to replace the chain as its stretched too much. right now it is adjsuted pretty much on the new mark. can someone tell me how much the chain is supposed to move up and down when i grab it?

    Those answers......and more.....are in the users manual.
    You REALLY should get one.
    Until then, a dealers service department should be able to give you the info you need for a oil change.
    Sometimes what looks like a drain bolt is NOT.

    The transmission shares the engine oil. Do NOT use car oil in the bike.

    If the chain lube you got was not mostly plain OIL, you probably need to clean it good with mineral spirits and then run it with 90W for a while.
    The clicking you hear might be the chain.
    It sounds to me like you are right on the verge of needing a chain adjustment, maybe a little over. There is a minimum slack; don't get it TOO tight.

    Nice little bike, just don't expect too much from it.
    Probably not good for the freeway.
