    DR250 - Under-powered?

I just bought a s/h imported Suzuki DR250S (I'm in the UK and this
is a Jap import). It's in great condition and all appears to be OK
except a couple of things. Whilst the bike seems to run fine, it
does seem a little under-powered to me, but I'm new to this so I'm
not sure. On the flat (road) I can hardly get the bike over
60mph...surely it should go somewhat faster than that. Now, to be
fair, I do weigh in at 220 pounds, so this will of course have some
effect...but 60mph...it's got to be better than that?

One other thing, when I dethrottle, the revs do not always die off
properly - I've checked the throttle cable and this is returning
correctly, so I assume it's something to do with the carb. I'm not a
mechanic but keen to learn, so bear with me if the answer is obvious.

Any answers/suggestions (and don't say 'lose weight'!!)would be
    greatly appreciated.

    DR250

It sounds like the carb could use alittle tuning. I ride a 1990 DR250 and the max speed is about 70mph. The 250 is not a real powerful bike to begin with. There are mods you can do to increase power, like air box mode, jetting change and hi-performance muffler.

    I own a DR250s 86´ and with my 70kg it reaches the 125km/h (78mph).

There are some questions I have, because there is´t much to find abut this bike in the internet.

My bike´s power is reduced to 17Hp. How? Carb, exhaust?

The Power of the "open" Dr 250S?

Does any one know some good informative sites about this bike?

    thank you.

Here's an airbox modification for the DR350
    http://www.kientech.com/AirBoxMod.htm
I'm gonna do it to my '92 DR250s (jap import with upsidedown forks and silly height control)
They've also got a mod for the stock exhaust.. which entails replacing the stock baffle with a wider one.. you gotta love cheap tweaks eh!

    Try this site:

They have good hints for mods. Followed the ones for my wife's DRZ125L and my son's TTR90E. I just did a search with keywords '250' and 'mod' which brought up that list. Hope it helps.

i have a 1990 dr250s and i can cruise at about 85mph my top is about 98mph. the dr250s is fster than the dr250 because the dr250 was meant for a dirtbike and the dr250s as an enduro. so there is a sprocket size difference. the dr250 is alot bigger, the bigger the sprocket the better the take off but the lower the top speed. my revs dont die off all the way all the time either, they drop to approx. 5000rpm. then just bump the throttle and it will drop the rest of the way. i weigh 190 so your 220 isnt the problem. it could just need a good carb cleaning and check your air filter.
