I have not had anyone try to mess with the bike yet but it did save me money on insurance so in my opinion it is worth it.
As RC said, if a professional thief really wants it they are going to take it no matter what you do, but the alarm will discourage a 'theft of opportunity' and at least scream bloody murder if someone messes with it while you are parked somewhere.
I have the alarm system on my 08 EGC. It will work as advertized. You will only need the key FOB on your person and the bike will start. It has to be with in 6 to 8 feet for it to read it. It's alarm is an extra, about $80.00 as I recall and has its own battery which will need replacing once a year or so. The alarm is quite loud. BE WARNED to carry the start code in your wallet (they provide a card for this) cause if you leave the FOB in your garage and it starts and you ride away from it and you shut it off it will NOT start with out the code!!!

Thanks for the replies, he decided not get it right now but may get it in the near future.
I think it costs more after the fact.
I would have gotten it, just to reduce the insurance.
I have an 09 with security, but no factory alarm. What I did was to go down to Radio Shack and buy their Piezo Alarm for $5.69. It has two wires which you can easily plug into the wiring plug which is usually reserved for plugging in the Harley factory siren. This does not call your cell phone but this little bastard screams like a banshee if someone messes with your bike. Had it on for a year now, works great.
Built in alarms are good but if your bike will sit for extended periods of time then you need to keep a battery tender on it. They will draw juice from the battery while idle.
