On the lookout for a new bike ;)

    Hey all,

We are about to close on our first house and the wife is 'blessing' me with the chance to use the $8,000 tax credit and my current bike trade-in for a down payment on a Harley. I'll finance the rest, it should put me at about $100-$125 per month for a bit.

The bike I want is the 2010 Electra Glide Classic. We go to the beach every year and I want to be able to ride this down when we go. Also, I live in west Tennessee and want to ride east into the mountains from time to time.

I attached (I think) a picture of the bike. I won't be getting it until January/February of next year, but since it's been approved, I'm good to go so it's no longer a "wish list" item... it's going to be a reality. I can't wait.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'm getting the same color as the picture below, though they have a bit more chrome than I anticipate paying for... I will also get the Screamin' Eagle pipes for some extra sound ( but not obnoxious ) and highway pegs.

What the hell am I looking at? When does this happen in the movie? You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now. What happened to then? We passed then. When? Just now. We're at now now. Go back to then. When? Now! Now? Now! I can't. Why?
We missed it. When? Just now. When will then be now? Soon.

just one question - as long as you have a house, and some money - buy a 2 year old harley (the prices have come down somewhat lately) and finance with a home equity loan?

more than a couple of guys are selling their toys to avoid losing more important things (house for example).

Well first, we are closing on the house this month so refinancing that soon probably won't be much of an option.

I'll definitely check into the used bike scene before I purchase the new one of course.... I won't buy a bike that's 2008 or older because of the chassis changes and a few other minor mods to the bike since the 2009 model came out.

Either way though, I'm getting my dream bike.

You will love the new EG,I wouldn't rule out a great deal on an '08 though,I've ridden both.
The '09-'10 bikes do have the frame and tire upgrades but the difference isn't that huge.
I would want the newer bike too but should the right deal on an '08 come along......if ya know what I mean.
I have a 2000 Classic (bought new & is my second EG) with 160,000 miles on the clock and still love it.
Hope to buy another new one when things get better and I get back to work.
Local dealers here still have a few '09's,that hasn't happened in a lot of years so look for a deal,it's a buyers market.

Very nice. Which pipes you runnin' and I see those end caps. As mentioned above, I was thinking of the Screamin' Eagle pipes. I want my Harley to sound GOOD but not obnoxiously loud ( i.e. if I drive away from my house at 7 AM I don't want to wake the entire neighborhood ).

They are the Bub's Rinehart true duals, pretty damn loud when I open her up.
You'll like the SE II slip on's,nice low rumble but not real loud.
My buddy has a set on his '08 Ultra and they sound great.

I've actually changed my tune a bit. I went this weekend and took some various models for a test ride. The Electra Glide had too much fairing... otherwise a fantastic ride. I'll be getting the 2010 Road King (not classic, I want the hard bags) instead. I'll also be putting the Rush slip-ons instead of the Screamin' Eagles. They've got a better sound.

    Street Glide.

    Look into it.

    Best of both worlds.

With the Uly..I've found I will not have another bike without bags on it. Luggage space rocks.

The RK is a great bike, same chassis as the EG,I love my batwing fairing but they're not for everyone.
If you wanted to go there, there are several aftermarket batwing fairings for the RK that can be taken on and off in place of the windshield for those long trips or for winter weather riding.
Nice feature that gives you the best of both worlds, windshield,no windshield or fairing depending on the situation.

The fairing blocks the wind. That's great when it's super cold but down here it doesn't get super cold. In the winter, a mere windscreen will suffice for me. That's why I decided to go towards the Road King.

I like the wind when I'm riding around town. I'll have the windscreen on when it's winter and/or big highway rides.

Yeah,a lot depends on the use of the bike and your home port so to speak.
Up here in the PAC NW we get a lot of rain and have long Winters.
I also do a lot of long range touring or at least I used to before the economy took a dump and I lost my job.
I've been on a lot of long rides in all sorts of country and weather, got snowed on in the Colorado Rockies one in August, been across the Mohave desert a few times in some incredible heat and was glad I had a fairing for that too.
Its' also nice riding the PCH 101 going in and out of fog along the ocean but if I had a second bike just for local riding again it would be sans windshield.
I rode naked for years but after a few long trips with no shield I bought my first E-Glide with a fairing and it was instant love.

Heh yeah. Don't get me wrong, I want the windscreen. I just don't want ALL of the fairing is all.

I do understand although I've seen a lot of guys with the same sensibilities buy an RK and then later end up with an Electra or Roadglide full faired bike.
That said most were like me and got into long range riding where the virtues of a fairing really shine.
Truth is there's no one road bike or set up does it all but an RK is about as convertible and multi purpose as they get with a few accessories added.
I sure miss my old Superglide sometimes and will likely own another someday as a stablemate to my big glide.
You are so going to love that RK,my money says you'll find yourself straying farther and farther from home as you get comfortable with her, trust me it's almost inevitable.
