just bought 84 magna v30
hey i just bought an 84 magna v30 as my first bike. it was running when we left the guys house but it didnt make it home. my friend was driving it so im not too sure what was happening to it, he said it just dies once it gets to the lower rpms, and the guy who sold it to me told me to keep the choke kinda high when im stopped but when its running its fine to turn it down. well it died on my buddy a few times and finally when we got to the highway it wouldnt rev up past 6k. luckily the guy came a picked us up, towed the bike back to my place and all that. but he said its because the oil needs to be changed and i believe him because the same oil has been in it for 4 years! 4 %%%%ing years, he cleaned the carbs but couldnt change the oil haha o well. but hoopefully thats the only problem. i need to adjust the rear brake too and tighten the chain so any help would be tremendous. lookin forward to gettin on the road! thanks

HE doesn't know jack.......and I'm afraid that you are a little too trusting.
It's likely that his carb cleaning wasn't good enough.
The oil situation isn't good but unlikely that old oil is really causing a problem with running.......unless it is also WAY low.
Of course it needs to be changed. I think I'd do it again in 500 miles or so.
How old is the GAS in the tank ??
I suggest that you need to drain the tank and float bowls, inspect the fuel filter and screens and then put a dose of Berryman's B12 Chemtool in the fresh gas; two ounces per gallon in half a tank. After a couple of short rides, and sitting overnight in between, it hopefully will start to clear up. Fill the tank up when it improves.
If it does NOT have a fuel filter you should put one on it.
Ceramic or paper is preferred over a simple screen.

If he cleaned the carbs, I hope ha didn't mix the parts. On a v4 Honda the front carbs have different parts than the rear carbs. Check out this site Honda Sabre, Magna, Interceptor BBS - Index They can help. The site is dedicated to V4 Honda's
Try what Easy Rider said, but do not use any spray carb cleaner. It will destroy the Diaphragms in the carbs. They are hard to find, and quite expensive.
