98 Honda Shadow 750 Ace Chain Noise
Hey I had a question about the chain on my 98 shadow. I just replaced the rear tire and when I rotate the rear tire I hear a very faint click. It is happening right where the chain is engaging with the sprocket. Has anyone else noticed this? I don't remember if I hear it before I took the tire off. The chain is straight and sprockets are not worn. I am probably a begin a bit pariond but wanted to see if a normal sound is head when you rotate the tire. Keep in mind it is quiet I only hear it cause the bike is on a lift and no other noise.

Where is the chain on the "alignment and wear" marks ??
There could be more wear than you think.......or it could just be too tight.
Then again if it is really faint, it could be normal. A chain is not completely quiet.

when I had chain drive, made the habit of replacing the chain with the tire.

I'll bet you are in a TINY minority with that schedule.
Most modern chains last 2-3X as long as the average bike tire.

it just seemed to me, that the cost of a chain was a fraction of the cost of a tire, so while everything was tore apart, why not.
I would also compare the new chain to the old chain and the old chain had so much lateral slop that it could easily form the letter "U" and the new chain was tight.
That, and I had a couple of chain related breakdowns, so it wasn't worth the aggravation to get a chain to last 2 tires.
BTW, tire life was around 10,000 miles, and I wasn't always all that religious about cleaning the gook off the chain and re-oiling it.

NO.....really ???
I wouldn't have guessed THAT !!
How often did you change the sprockets ??

I think its normal to hear a little noise, I changed both sprockets and chain on my friends gsxr, and when you rotate the tire with it off the ground you hear some noise, but not a lot

I was a bad bad boy, never did change the sprockets, figured they were good for the life of the bike.
Finding out that train of thought was wrong, but I was young and stupid.
Now, I'm just an older version.
Then I went to shaft drive and all I need to do is change the oil every other year.......
just about what kind of interval is required for changing the sprockets, anyway?

If you run the chain to the point that IT shows significant wear......usually around 20K highway miles with modern chains.......then every time you change the chain.
By changing the chain at half that interval or less......the sprockets MIGHT last a long time.
They might contribute the faster chain wear too.
