    Problems downshifting into 1st gear

    I just purchased a 05 black M50 from a buddy of mine last week. The bike only has 1450 miles and seems to be in good shape. I have noticed several times when downshifting to stop at an intersection, the bike sometimes just refuses to go into 1st gear. It wont get past neutral to engage the gear. Usually after some cussing and popping the gear shifter, I can eventually get it to go into 1st.

    The guy I got it from put a forward control kit on it. I am wondering if that is part of the problem if its just something funny these bikes do? Most of the times it works fine.

    It's normal with many bikes..... Downshift while rolling to a stop or release the clutch and reapply it.

    I've never had that happen. Although, when shifting into first I'm usually already stopped...or I'm moving very, very slowly, but I still never encountered a problem getting her into 1st.

    This happens to me, sometimes while sitting at Light in N, the bugger won't go into 1st. Try bliping the throttle and trying again, or Roll back a few inches with your feet as you downshift. This has worked almost everytime, once I had to hit the kill switch and restart and then It went right into gear.

    +1 happens to me about twice a month. what everyone else says works fine.

    Had the same problem. For some reason once you come to a stop in neutral you have to release the clutch and then pull it back again. Once you do this it goes in everytime.

    Sounds like it might be a saftely mechnixim then per Gabe's comment.....

    Dismount and run a full circle around the bike and get back on.

    +4 on letting out the clutch & pulling it back. 10k and it still does it from time to time.

    Thats for the responce everyone. I'm sure you can tell by the question that I am beginner. I'm just glad there is nothing up with the bike....enjoy

    The M's my first bike. I was frustrated as heck when it kept happening. The Motorcycle Operaters Manual for Indiana said I should down shift to N when stopping then Downshift to 1st when I was ready to take off. I was about to kick the clutch lever straight through to the asphalt it was making me so mad. Luckily I figured it out. If I was smart I would have asked on here like you did.
