My mechanic re lubed it but did not mention any problems about it.
My mechanic checked it, and found it was fine. However, I bought the bike used with 10k miles, so it's possible it was fixed before I bought it.
wow that's 1 out of 3 bikes are bad! so far

put a new rear tire on mine and checked it while apart found more than adequate grease.
After digging around I pulled out the last inspection report from the mechanic and his exact words were "Final Drive Fluid - Dirty". He drained, refilled and checked the level. Which came to $33.89
He did not mention anything about rust or any damage what so ever though.
That's probably the final drive oil ,and not the issue we are talking about here.

300winmag,
I agree with Burn on this one, the mechanic replaced your diff fluid, this is not the same thing. it's worth the time and money for the piece of mind.
I was thinking about this today at work. I'm going to have to read your sticky and figure this out!!
After seeing the numbers increase dramatically lately ....you'd be silly not to!
It could seriously save your life, and I think it's just plain ignorant if people don't check it ,and they ride passengers!

I not sure how it would lock up.
It may remove all teeth and lose drive power though.
I think it is a good idea to check it and save money.
When the teeth are removed where do they go? = they are still floating around in there, and there isn't much room...although the gears broken off wouldnt lock it up inside the gear housing..a failure of the outer part of that gear could.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.
Took care of it last night and I am happy to report, I'm all good. There was a thin layer of some vaseline-like grease in there. Although I didn't have any issues, there was some rusty grease in there. I threw it in the parts washer and inspected everything, no wear was found. I slapped some marine bearing grease in there. I'll probably check it again before next winter since it isn't hard to do and took no time at all. Thanks again, Burn. We'll have to meet up and get some miles in.
