    Suzuki VS750 motor oil

    Hi

I have an Intruder VS750 1985 model. I have a ticking / clicking sound also after adjusting the valves. It gets somewhat better when the motor is hot and also mostly hearable when idle. I was recommended by a person having a MC repair shop, to use full synthetic oil Motul 15W50, double ester. This is a racing oil I understand.

Another guy having "repaired MCs for 30 years" listened to the sound, but could not quite advise of the reason. But he said that it was "nonsense" to use full synthetic oil for this MC. "You should use mineral oil", he said, e.g. 20W50 or even 60. My Suzuki dealer also recommended mineral oil 20W50. Both the last ones says that the ticking sound will lessen when I use mineral oil.

Anyone having any ideas / recommendations / experiences / thoughts?

The ticking is likely a valve that's on the loose side of spec, or slightly out if you weren't careful. It quiets as the engine heats because the parts expand and the clearances shrink.

Oil is like underwear... everyone likes his own best. I use full synth (Mobil 1 15-50) because I believe that it is good for a 5,000 mile interval and because it makes my transmission shift more smoothly. I don't necessarily think it will spare any wear on the engine in the long term. YMMV.

Ooh. That's one fruit basket I'll avoid. Are we making a good first impression with 'carl?

Use whatever oil you want- 10W-40, 20W-50...synthetic or conventional. Just change it often, and make sure you never put in anything marked "friction modifiers" or "fuel saving" because the super-slippery additived will make your wet clutch slip.

Oh, and anyone who tells you to put in synthetic oil or a heavier weight oil to mask the noice of a tapping valve has no business calling themselves a motorcycle mechanic. If the motor is tapping, something is wrong. If the motor is tapping after a valve adjustment, and it didn't before, then it is very obvious the valve adjustment was not done correctly.
