    Oil amount and type

Hi , I just recently purchased a 1996 Suzuki Intruder 1400 . It came with out the owners manual , therfore I have a few questions for any Intruder owners . 1 What type of oil is best for this bike ? 2 How much oil does it take for a oil change ? 3 How often should I change the oil ? Thanks in advance for any help .

    Gary

All that info should be in the manual. Find one on the net, should be around 20-25 bucks.

Does it have a dip stick? If so just add until the right level, start it, shut it off and check it again. If not, there must be a drip screw to check it that way. I would change it about every 500-700 miles.

Oh yea, when you check your oil level, make sure the bike is on the center stand. If you don't have one, just make the bike as level as possible.

On the right side engine case there is a little round window, with an oil fill line etched in it. Hold the bike level and see where the oil is in the window to check the level.
Next to the level is stamped a number, which is the oil capacity in milliliters. On my VS800 it says 2500, which is 2.5 liters, or 3.7 quarts. The 1400 is more like 5 quarts or 4700 milliliters, but I forget. The stamped number is the amount you put in with a filter change,so just follow that.
IIRC the oil/filter change interval is 4000 miles, same as my 800. It certainy won't hurt to change it more often, but I think every 500-700 miles is a bit excessive, as I often ride more than 500 miles in one day.

Holy Cow, really??? You change it that often?? I guess when i had a street bike I only put on like 1000 miles a years so I thought once or twice a year was about good.

You absolutely do not need to change your oil every 5 to 7 hundred miles. Every 3000 or once per riding season (Whichever comes sooner) is fine after the break in period.

See, oil threads never die, this one has been going on since 2004, the last post until yesterday was in 2004 as well.

    Just for kicks

Now today is the last post instead of in May. But I must say, 500-700 miles is oh so overboard. I don't know of anything that needs an oil change that often.
