Thanks, know what you mean by deep freeze. I used to drive an 18 wheeler from Texas to the West, Northwest, and Alberta. Always wanted to ride my bike in that beautiful country and now I do every summer. Have ridden in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and the states in between. No trailer used. Put 83,000 miles on an 02 Vulcan and traded for for 2 Harley FXSTC's (one is for my wife) a few months ago.
Hi and welcome from Far West Texas.
Welcome from north western Iowa.
Heh,yeah I can relate.
I've driven for Schneider National and May Trucking and currently am driving a local gig in a wood-chip hauler (possum belly) hauling from lumber & pulp mills to paper mills which gets me home every day and on weekends.
Sounds like you've covered some ground on the bikes too so we have that obsession in common as well.
I've ridden all over the Western half of the country including 4 days in Texas.
I bought a 1980 Pete long nose the first year they came out with the 380 DI, it had 5x4 with OD but only had a 4.33 rear end. Hauled fat cattle to Dallas City Packing from Pecos 5 days a week for about a year, then started hauling a load of swinging meat to Beaverton every week and haul mostly apples back. Bought my own reefer and started hauling chickens to Ca. produce from Ca. to Edmonton and Calgary, then drop down into Wyoming and hauled grain to Washington and apples/seafood back to Dallas. BTW my wife can also drive an 18 wheeler, she could go through the gears smother than Me. click click.
enjoy reading your posts.
Had to get off the road when youngest son started to school so I learned to 'drive' a computer and spent the next 25 years in data processing.
It is so beautiful up there, we rode up and looked at St. Helens from the Northeast, 2 days later we went to the Southwest side and it looked like a different mountain.
I replaced the transmission oil in my 07 with Spectro Platinum synthetic 75/140 for six speeds. It made a huge difference in the noise that the helical gears cause in that model (if my understanding is correct). If you have an opinion and/or more information, I would appreciate hearing it.
Well I haven't ridden much on the 6 spd bikes but I'd imagine they're not much different in that respect than my 5 spd.
In my experience they can be pretty noisy and make chirping noises as well as whines for quite a few miles but in time the gears wear in and things quiet down.
Both my FXR and my current E-Glide did that and then wore in.
I've only run H-D dino oil in all three holes in all my bikes over the years and never had any gear troubles.
The FXR had 125,000 miles on it when I sold it to a friend,he sold it at 145,000 and I lost track of it but at that point the trans was still original (as well as the bottom end of the motor).
It shifted smooth and ran quiet, same story with my 2000 E-Glide,it was a pretty noisy tranny when she was new but it quieted down over time and still works great at nearly 170,000 miles now.
