Why does everyone think that driving a car with a manual transmission is such a big deal?
My Audi has a 6-speed manual transmission. My bike has a 6-speed manual transmission. Our fire truck has a 8-speed manual transmission. My wife's Honda Jazz has a semi-automatic 6-speed (it's essentially a clutchless manual transmission which can be shifted manually or by the computer).
It's no problem whatsoever!
Why do people have such a narrow view of the world that they don't understand that everybody is different ??
Not everybody can hit a baseball for home runs, not everybody understands calculus........and not everybody has the skill to master a stick shift.
Why is understanding that such a problem for some folks ??
I have a Mazda 3 with a 6 speed manual. I don't get it either, Tim. People always ask me of that's all I could get. I chose it because I wanted one.

The truck (Freightliner ) I use on my part time job has a 10 speed, you have to double clutch or "float" the gears when shifting, most people can't drive that rig for sure. I won't make fun of those who can't drive it though. Most people can do anything they really want to do though as my kid says, why would you want to drive a manual if you don't have to, she has Dr. in front of her name so I bet she could drive a manual if she wanted to not be shiftless.

I never had exposure to a manual vehicle with the exception of a Honda Civic my dad had. He wouldn't let me learn with it. I can understand why most people won't use their own vehicle to teach someone how to shift. When I worked for Schwan's, they forced me to take the 4 speed out many times when mine went in for service. I had no choice but to learn how to shift. The biggest problem I had was no one would give me any advice as I think they wanted me to quit. A friend of mine got a job there and he quit when he found out they were going to force him to drive it also. When he told them he didn't know how to drive a stick, they didn't care. Once I got advice from someone who had the experience, it wasn't hard to learn.
All I drive is stick shift. It's the one thing i refuse to give up when buying a car/truck. My wife had no choice but to learn to drive a manual transmission. Once you get a feel for the clutch and get the vehicle rolling it's easy. The only other difficult at first things to over come is hill starts... the car rolling back on someone not used to a manual can be unnerving.
And welcome back Pugsly

Ay up Pugs' nice to see you again.
And btw the manual is the weapon of choice over here, everyone learns on one. If you pass a Auto specific test over here you haver to re-sit to drive a manual, however, if you pass the manual test as 99.9% of the poluplation does, then you can drive an auto as well.
When God rides, he rides in Scotland. I know this for a fact, because people often confuse him with me..!!
The driving lessons I took in England help me smoke the driving test when I got back to the states.
well pugs, find a nice big parking lot for starters.
Then drive around and low speed maneuvers both forward and back because that's when you're going to stall the engine.
good luck.
Sadly enough, I still stall the bike a couple of times a year because I forget the basics.
