Yet Another Young Squid on a Sport Bike Story

The province of Ontario, in an effort to curb street racing, just passed a new law last week which gives the police the power to impound your vehicle for one week if you are caught exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h ( ~ 30mph ).

TorontoSun.com - Toronto And GTA - Impact begins to be felt

Short version of story: 23 year old gets nabbed on a brand new 2008 R1 ( not his, no mention if it's stolen or no though ) hitting speeds up to 210 km/h ( speed limit on highway is 100 km/h ) and then crashes the bike while trying to elude police. Ontario also has a graduated licencing system and the rider only had a beginner's permit so he was not allowed to be on the highway in the first place.

"It now sits in a police pound. And just like all the other cars, the $400,000 Vanquish will sit there with seagulls circling above it."
    Cops being sensationalist. Nice.

Really, I have no objection to that law. It's pretty mild compared to some. 30 mph over is serious in an urban area.

    OMG, he crashed a 2008 R1????
I'm more concerned that the bike that got crashed was a brand new bike that just came out!!!

Ontario seems to be coming up with really strict traffic laws lately....
And if it shows it has effect, other States might follow.
    Canadians, beware!!!

There's a good reason for laws like this coming into effect: %%%%tards who fail to realise that speed limits exist for a good reason in the sprawl that is suburban Toronto.

In a nutshell, anything within a 2 hour drive of the GTA is now suburban Toronto. Farming communities with their long, 2- lane streets have now become service roads to the 407 or the highway of your choice. After 7 or 8 at night these streets are virtually deserted, and the Millenium generation of hotrodders blasts along at ridiculous speeds, failing to realize that someone pulling out of an unlit sidestreet on their way home from dinner with the neighbours won't be going 200 kmh.

Many people have been killed by fools who think they're on the track. And so, if you want to do 130 on an 80 road, they're gonna take your car for a week. Immediately. And slap you with $2500 in fines before you get your wheels back.

Anyone want to get rich in Ontario? Set up a racetrack or three for street cars somewhere south of Milton.

    erm... provinces...
we aren't part of the 'States' yet

i doubt other the western provinces would follow... they don't speed nearly as much as the eastern provinces (quebec and ontario)

    Sorreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey.

BTW, I didn't know that "speeding" had geographical differences.
Wait....I guess it does. We also have areas that tend to speed! But I never thought about it.

    hah...

canada odd that way... a lot of land, not many people caparativly
people in the western and eastern coasts are more laid back... central canada only has straight roads so that leaves quebec and ontario (which have the most people) to do all the speeding

Only someone who has never been to Vancouver would think that it was laid back
Yeah, they play hard out West, but that's because they spent all that time working hard first.
That being said, it's easy to tell you're in the Lower Mainland, because everyone goes 70 all the time - whether the limit is 50 or 100

hah... i've been to vancouver... and the island... and i lived in alberta and i've driven pretty much all over...

vancouver in rush hour... someone wants to cross the road (not at a stop or light) and they put their hand out and it stops 4 lanes of traffic. ottawa, toronto, montreal... they'd be flattened like a pancake

but pretty much that... in a 50 km zone people do 70-80 and in a 100 zone people do 120-140... except for montreal... too much traffic to speed so they resort to cutting you off poorly

Yes Canada does have a vast land no matter which part of Canada you are in (compared to my place!! LOL). To me, the speed limit does seem low for the kind of roads you have. Over here, our speed limit is 80 km/hr or 100 km/hr on highways but you can ride at around 120 km/hr without getting caught. In fact, to go with the flow, you'll have to do 100-120.

But bikes usually go faster than cars (130 - 150 km/hr) in general.

We definitely need more land here and it's not helping that we have lots of mountains and very little plain land. Well, that's great for motorcycles though because we have lots of good twisties.
