I have a radar detector. It is in a drawer in the garage.
I put it there after I discovered that the places I needed it the most......open highway with little to no traffic......are also the places where Instant On Radar and a Cop with a good hiding place can slap your ass back to reality real quick.![]()
To be honest, when I had a radar detector on my SV, I just used the suction cups mounts just like in a car. Put a piece of padding on the underside of teh radar detector, mount it on the windsheild so that the bottom of the radar sits on the top of the tach..No issues!
Old post - I know - but I'd like to again reiterate the uselessness of radar detectors.
Cops don't drive around with the radar on all the time. We see a car, we turn it on. Your detector will go off, but we've already got ya! That's how I was taught to use the radar, and that's the way the rest of the cops I knew used it (IF they even used it at all - there were quite a few who didn't like traffic stops).
Every day I wake up is a good day!
had a radar detector - the laser radar does not give you a lot of time to do anything.
To the best of my recollection - at 1/4 of mile the laser is about 8 feet wide. You are either "painted" or not, there is no "the laser is on but focused at another car" kind of stuff unless the newest radar detectors have gotten a lot better these last few years.
Nor do the current "RF" models that are "instant on". They don't give off GOBS of spurious radiation when in standby like the old ones did. I'd be surprised if you could "detect" one more that 50 feet away.
That kind of WAS my point. If traffic is fairly heavy, you might have a chance. If it is light, odds are you're done for.
that's why you drive about the speed of traffic around you.
and as a sidebar - the Kenosha county and Racine County cops are real stinkers.
and do not base you judgement of WI cops off of these two counties, they just love to tag the people speeding north out of IL (IL does not really enforce speeding laws on their freeways - not sure why).
I have a V1, and noticed the cig. adapter is behind the chair.
I was wondering, if you use that adapter (until I hard wire it)....where do you place the radar detector???
In the drawer, in the garage...like Easy Rider stated.Originally Posted by marryjain

Radar protectors are just letting you know that law enforcement already has you on their radar. Since the newer technology uses lasers or the older "instant on" style, for speed detection, one way to combat them is to use a radar deflection unit.
However, radar deflection units or scramblers are illegal. The FCC says that any frequency can be monitored, but not altered. A deflection unit sends a false signal back to the user, much like most military aircrafts use. Since the military are Federal their application doesn't apply.
My question is: Why would you even bother with a radar detection unit, when you're sitting on a rocket that can't be caught with a car? Not to advocate a felony evasion issue, but most law enforcement departments will not pursue motorcycles...once they've lost sight of the bike. At least, that's their "in house" policy, to avoid any loss of life to any other motorists involved in the chase.
Even so, there's the mentality of a few L.E.O.s that says, "How dare you run from me. I'm the law." So, there's that to deal with.

See I realy want a radar detector. (that could have saved me $340 something two years ago in a poe-dunk town) But there is simply no place to put one on my cruiser sans windshield. I thought about on the exposed tripple tree under the headlight but then I wonder if those big chunks of aluminum might block the antena. What I would realy like to see is a radar detector with a remote mount antena that could be mounted somewhere descreatly while the unit is burried under the tank or in the tool box. I like that the ONE radar detector made for bikes has remote mount LEDs and audio plug in though, now just make them hide on cruisers with open front ends.
As far as mounting yours goes, you may just consider one of those plates on a movable arm and tuck it under the windshield.
Even so, in Colorado and Utah where state laws state that an officer must be visable when speed trapping (no hiding behind signs buildings or other obstructions) your best defense is being eagle eyed. Anticipate areas where they might be hiding, ei, long straite with a slight blind hill, turn or bridge over-pass. Change in county line or entering a populated area. You can also use websites that mark common areas for speed trapping publicly such as Trapster, they even have apps for smart phones but are heavily battery intensive. NMc

Do you use a tank bag? A friend of mine has an upper end detector and he just puts it on top of his tank bag and the sound goes into his helmet through bluetooth. Not a perfect system but could be a temporary solution.
