The early ones (2009-2012) were not very good in any aspect, but the new 2013/ 2014 models get good reviews. They have a dealership here in Atlanta, actually a large used motorcycle dealership that sells a few of these a year. The general impression is that they ride, handle, and accelerate like a 500cc sportbike. The knock is that the range listed is for low-speed city driving only. At 55 MPH the charge lasts only an hour and a quarter, and at 70 MPH the battery is dead in about 40 minutes. They are not cheap, being over $13,000, and add $1800 for a better charger if you don't want it to take 6-10 hours to recharge. But if you just commute around town and are not looking for a "ride all day on weekends real motorcycle", they are a realistic option, and depending on what state you life in you could get up to 20% of the purchase price back in tax credits.
Re #2 above. This was one of Dr Bob's last posts before his untimely death in early April. As usual, he provided very useful information and intelligent comment.
Vale Dr Bob.
Cycle World has a nice write up on the 2014 Zero SR and ashorter blurb on the FX ZF5.7 model. I would guess the more people hear about the ‘lectric bikes the more will be sold and over time the price will drop.
Wait until you need new batteries. Just for the electric scooters I use to use for camping, one model that would break 20 mph, the battery pack is $140. You can bet for the extra weight and speed, those batteries are going to cost big.
Well maybe in the near future if the fuel cost would be the same as gold than e- bike would be a great alternative, but for now I would also pass the idea.
