1981-82 GS450T minor problems NEED HELP!
Hey guys,
I'm new to the Forum and semi new with motorcycles. A couple years ago my dad bought a 82 gs450t from a guy down the street for $300. It wasn't running when we bought it. We replaced the starter and bought a new battery. It wouldn't start with the electric start but I can get it running by popping the clutch. I've been riding it for the past couple months this way and it rides alright.
I took the electrical component apart on the handle bars and cleaned all contact points. Did nothing.
A friend told me that it might just be the solenoid...
Has anyone had the same problem? It would be awesome if I could get some help!!
Also, It leaks a little oil from a black line that goes into the top part of the engine directly behind the front wheel. It started to leak a little more now that I've been riding it but it is not leaking a lot.
I can provide pictures of the motorcycle if anyone wants to see certain parts of the bike or just the bike in general!
Any help would be much appreciated!!!!
Thanks,
Tyler

There is no separate solenoid, but there is a relay. Locate the two large terminals on the starter relay. Turn the ignition key on. Using two screwdrivers, touch one to each terminal and then touch the screwdrivers together. This will bypass the relay. If the starter motor turns, replace the relay. If the starter does not turn, start tracing wires until you find something loose or shorted out.

Yep it successfully bypasses the relay. Thanks Dr.Bob and do you know how much it will cost, where to get a relay and is it simple enough for a noobie to replace?
