Question 01 VStar650 ONLY starts in neutral

Bought my wife an 2001 Vstar 650 Custom. Nice bike in great shape. But it has one quirk, it will only start if the transmission is in neutral. (I have a 2002 Vstar Silverado that will start in any gear as long as I engage the clutch)

The AIS system has been removed from this bike and the pipes have been modified.

Is this normal of the model year or does it have something to do with the AIS system being removed? Or is there something else that I need to look at?

    Thanks for any help.

    Dave

Kickstand switch ?? Which prevents the bike from running (or starting) if the side stand is down AND it is in gear.
Don't believe everything that you think.

    OK

Fixed it. The contacts in the clutch switch were gunked up. Cleaned them up and it works perfectly.

Thanks for all your help guys.

I'm sure I'll have a lot more ?'s over time.

I just got my first bike, the same, a V Star 650. I am having the exact same problem. Would you mind letting me know how to clean these contacts and get to them? Thanks soo much!

For checking oil in the window, I bought a telescoping mechanic's mirror for about $7 at Sears. I hold the bike level, poke the mirror down and take a peek - easy to do once you get used to looking at the window backwards
Some people are good with words and other people ... thingie.
