New Stratoliner - gas tank label removal screw up
Just got our new Stratloiner 'S'. Removed the gas tank label with a hair dryer and finger nail. The thick sticky glue was left. Thought in the past I used paint thinner to remove this but it dulled the paint. So I tried a polishing compound but it must have contained abrasives. It's a larger dulled area now. Anyone know what the right stuff would be to bring the paint back to shine as like the rest of the gas tank? Appreciate any help!!

Don't know how to fix the problem, but on my M50 I never took it off. Just covered it up with a tank bib. If all else fails you might try putting one on to cover your booboo.

Polishing (rubbing) compound strips everything off the surface of the paint. Try a nice carnauba wax... Mothers is my favorite... to bring it back.

First you need to determine if it actually removed the glue or just spread it around so you will know if you still need to first remove remaining glue or not.
Goo Gone is best as it won't harm normal paint. Goof Off is more powerful but WILL fog some paints.....or worse if you leave it on too long.
If/when the glue really is gone and there still is a dull spot, visit a body shop with a small jar (baby food size) and ask them to sell you some glazing compound. It's expensive stuff so expect to pay $5-10 just for a few oz.
Rub the CRAP out of it with the glazing compound. After a half hour or so (by hand) it should start looking shiny again. THEN you can put on a good wax.
OR......use some Goo Gone and go right to the wax. Much easier but not as permanent.

+1 Easy Rider's advice...
PS....All polishing compounds DO contain abrasives.... they are just usually uniformly small enough particle sizes that when they are properly applied, the pits in the surface they leave are small enought that the surface will reflect light.

I use color rite paint and clear coat to fix minor damage to my Corbin bags and it worked great.

3M Scratch Repair kit
Cheap and works great..
3M Scratch Removal System, 3M Scratch Remover Kit, scratch repair, remove scratches
First, if you suspect that there is still glue present on the tank, spray some WD40 on a soft clean rag and remove the glue. Next, if the area is simply dull with no scratches, go with the black pad and the scratch remover. The scratch remover is abrasion-less. It does the job chemically. Properly done, you will never notice that there was ever a problem. Good luck!
