oil problem with a 81 maxim
Hey I get a dilemma with my wifes Maxim. She was riding and pulled over for a bite to eat. There were no strange sounds. We we left the bike dumped its oil out the breater tube near the air filter. Any ideas on trouble shooting? Maxims are new to me. Thanks for any help

okay, the bike dumped it's oil out the breather tube.
1) about how much oil did it dump out (remember, on a flat surface, even a cup of oil will look pretty massive, much less a quart).
2) there won't be any strange sounds as the bike had good lubrication when it was running, and whatever oil "spewed out" somehow occurred after the bike was parked.
which leads to 3
3) have you checked the oil level, added oil as necessary and duplicated any of the said "oil spewing" in the least?
It would seem rather odd that this bike would be spewing that much oil through the breather tube. If indeed this is the case, one of the pistons has bad compression and a lot of blowby.

Thank you for your responce. The bike lost compression, could not even get out of its own way. Each time oil is ,was, added it would dump it. So the piston sounds like the culpret. Is this an issue that I could repair? I am not a mechanic by any means but I do take care of my Honda Shadow unless of coarse it requires major repairs. Thanks again

Given only what you said......then no, probably not.
If it were MY 27 year old bike, I would take it in to a shop for an evaluation and estimate.........and be thinking about what to get for a replacement.

not totally toast; you could just get another engine.
which prolly won't be any more expensive than getting this one running again.

It seems I am having the same problem but it has only happened after sitting for a few months. I recently changed the oil and filter and it did it again. Prior to it happening I beleive that I was running to much oil in it. Would it also push oil out the air breather if it were a head gasket? I am just looking for an alternitive to a rebuid if possible.

I will be checking compression this evening and then repost the results.
