Hello fellow riders! I got another question regarding aftermarket parts for the Tmax. I was looking at the aftermarket exhausts, in specific the yoshimura R-77 complete system. I would like too add this or another similar exhaust system mainly for a more agresive exhaust note. My question is this, first, would adding any aftermarket exauhst system require other modifications like opening the intake or messing with the fuel map? Second, will it add any or reduce any significant power with out any further modifications? Third, does any body have a recomindation on a brand of exhaust system?

It is a SCOOTER for heaven sake. Make it louder and it will..........STILL be a scooter.
You had better check of the availability of compatible FI controllers before you start changing things.
It's likely that the stock controller is NOT adjustable and if your pipe change adversely affects performance......as it very well could......you might be stuck between a rock and a hardplace if you can't change the mix to compensate.
A change in the intake is NEVER required.
Maybe you should search for a forum specific to that scoot.
I don't think you will find many riders who are into "modding".
as far as performance. even if you add 10% your not going to see much difference when your starting at 40hp. not sure i'd spend the $900 to get a pc, k&n and new pipe. but if i was going to spend 500 on a pipe i'd spend the other 400 and do it right.
Thanks for the info Tester, and Easy.. the Tmax is much more than a scooter! It really is a 500cc sport bike in scooterish atire!I have done its initial 600mi service, and i have now reached the 1000mi mark, and the engine feels stronger & revs faster than when it had 600mi. I did give it a couple of short full throtle runs After I hit the 600mi mark, and felt some what disapointed. The engine felt as if was boged down, and would not spin up as i expected as it took longer than i expected too reach highway cruising speed of 75mph. I really hoped that it would lossen up after the 1000 mark. Today i hoped on the freeway, I craked the throtle half way as I got on the onramp, the engine came alive!A big grin developed on my face imidiatly. The engine spun up like never before as it charged down the onramp with authority! It actually cought me by suprise as the acceleration threw my butt into the butt rest and snaped my neck bak a bit. It is now exactly what i expected from Yamaha's sportbike engineers and designers which are clearly the creators of the Tmax, and not scooter engineers. Now I still plan on adding an after market exhaust later down the road, but in year or so I will be adding a racing variator. Other Tmax owners that have added one say that it is the best performance upgrade, and its less expensive than a complete exhaust system. Let me kno if any one has heard different, or if you agree. Power to the Tmax.
hi new in here and looking for a little info ,, i have a t max 500 2009 ridden it for getting on for 18 months and love it . the only problem i have is an electrical one , when the bike is hot and i have been sitting in traffic for some time (fan on ) i have found that if i turn the engine off the battery is dead and will not start the bike . set of jump leads and it fires up again , short run and the battery is fine , even left overnight after a short run and all is well , it just happens when im in traffic and running hot has anybody else found this ? is it a battery problem ? although i have had it checked and all seems to be charging fine , i have had the volt regulator changed , thoughts anyone ?
although i have had it checked and all seems to be charging fine , i have had the volt regulator changed , thoughts anyone ?
If the charging voltage really IS good......then about the only thing left is the battery.......or a bad connection at one end of the main cables.
If the battery is more than 2 years old, I'd be looking for a new one. An AGM type (sealed) is preferred but a bit more expensive.
A slightly larger battery might help too......but few 2-wheelers have any extra space to do that.
In addition to all that, if there is a way to turn up the idle speed just a tiny bit, that might help too.
Don't want excessive drag on the transmission at a stop though.
It's not uncommon for a battery on a bike to go bad in two years. It just happened to my son's bike this spring. A very rough check is to see if you're getting about 14 volts across the terminals while running, and about 12.5 or so at rest. The 14 volts will tell you that the charging system is working. If that is OK leave the meter on the battery for awhile and see if the voltage starts to drop. That could signify a bad battery.
cheers that's pretty much what i thought , will just have to bite the bullet and buy a new battery , got slightly more pressing problems since i last posted though , a wanker reversed his truck into my parked bike !!!!!! now i have to play the insurance game , shame he managed to miss the battery !
If the bike fell over, there is no doubt that the battery was damaged.
The starting problem just showed up AFTER the accident......right......(wink, wink).
Well, I have had my Tmax for a month, and i have broken in the engine as the manual instructed. I have put 1,200 miles on it, and let me tell you guys that the Max runs fast and strong. Before the break in I did give it a few wide open throtle runs for a very short time, and the Max responded slugish! even at half throtle! I was somewat dissapointed as I expected more.. So, as I kept racking the miles on it I began to notice that every other day it rewsponded better to trhrotle input. It started geting of the line faster and reving up faster! I canot believe the difference in performance from then and now, and it is still geting a bit stronger as I notice that it does certain things faster than a few days ago. For example, a few days ago I was certain I new how much room I needed to overtake a car that is going 80mph as i am also going 80 next to him and a vehicle ahead of me is going slower, so i need to get ahead of him to getr in his lane and back to mine as i pass the slower car. The time it took lets just say it was to long that most often I did not have enough room, so I just fell back instead of trying to over take. I just recently tried an 80mph over take, and was I suprised by the Max. The Tmax's hart pumped like never before as I gave it just a little bit more throtle. The engine instantly reved up with an exhaust of a precicely fine tuned machine, and it instantly charged forward into the 90+mph zone with plenty of throtle left for another overtaking at that speed. I am truly amazed and satiesfied with my Tmax. I had a big grin on my face when i baught it, and now its huge and its not goin away. Heres a pic of my Tmax I added matching color wheel stripes so far and next is either HID headlights, or a fender eliminator kitt and im painting the side boomerangs a high gloss black to match the bootom half of the bike.
Safe riding brothers.
g man i gotta tell you i have had my max for 19 months done 16500 miles and i too still have a big grin on my face , i use it for work in town carrying all my tools , and for touring , often with a pillion doing some long runs into Europe and it does both perfectly . have you checked out the tank bag ? its very useful and looks pretty cool
Haha im glad im not alone. The Tmax is just awesome. Now the tunnel bag you speak of is it the one from yamaha? Or an after market one? I have seen the yamaha one, and yes i agree it does look great. I recently went to a parking lot sale at a local motobike shop and found a Ocelot tank bag that was originaly 50 dollars on sale for 15 dollars! I couldnt pass up the deal, so i bought it. Now this bag is designed for a traditional sport bike, but i managed to get a good fit on the passenger seat of my Tmax, and it looks good in my opinion and extra storage is always a good adition for any one that really uses the Tmax ( or any bike for that matter ) as a serious do it all machine. My next purchase is going to be a tunnel bag, so i would like to kno wich one you recomend, and i highly recomend the Ocelot tank bag for the pasenger seat.Safe riding brother!
Gman, if for some reason you wonna let go your Tmax, let me know!
Haha, the only reason I would sell my Tmax would be so can buy another one, but only if it had a significant upgrade like a biger engine. If that happens il let you kno.
i recently bought a 2009 yamaha t max, had 24 miles on it. now shows 2,600 plus...love it. handles great. i have always added k&n filters to other yamaha bikes...a 2005 xt225 and a 2004 kodiak 450 atv, with positive results. however, i notice several comments here state there is no added gain in horsepower or acceleration, and advised against changing out the stock filter. i always have believed more air equals more performance? will the stock cdi not adjust for the additional air and add more fuel? is it computer controlled or just a factory setting? i really don't want to change exhaust and/or cdi? what about variator mods (changing roller weights/variator rollers?) thanks.
