Yamaha Ignition Coils Regulator Rectifier, CDI Unit, Stator & Rev Box -
check there, it would appear 84 - 87 used the same coil. Which isn't very surprising, many parts like these are used across several years because reinventing the wheel every year would be a real hassle.
ok, so maybe i'm caling it by the wrong name. heres a link of what im taking about. YAMAHA XV920 VIRAGO XV750 CDI PICKUP COILS *FREE SHIP* - eBay (item 380151016309 end time Jan-12-11 07:50:05 PST)
see there, that's normally just called a "pickup" or "electronic pickup" or something like that. It is basically a crank angle sensor - and it tells the computer when to send the spark to the spark plug.
As I described, the "coil" is where the energy is stored until the engine fires.
If the coil is 84 to 87, it would seem likely (but not absolutely) to be the same.
