    C90 Riders

POLL: C90 Riders. OK, OK So it's not really a poll but a question.

At what top speed do you run 4th gear to before shifting to 5th gear.

No poll present, but the answer varies with intent. The lowest speed to shift to fifth is about 50 to 55 mph. You can take a C90 to its maximum speed in 4th, so if doing a full acceleration on a track, you would shift after top speed is hit.

Do you have a RPM G. If so, what rpm are you running at 60mph/65mph

No, I don't have a tach. I just know from a lot of reading that this is a good rpm to change gears. Better to rev a tad high than to lug the motor.

I routinely shift into 5th at 60-65. I can cruise on flat at 55 in 5th, but have to downshift for acceleration, and I sure wouldn't ride at that rpm range in twisties where I want better performance. The bike likes being above 3K rpm. I just put a tach on the bike. I'll check out what the rpm range is tomorow.

Ok, I went out riding yesterday and can report back that when I merge from the freeway ramp into fast moving traffic, I shift to 5th at 75 MPH. That dropped the RPMs from 3200 to 2800. The bike can cruise all day at 80 MPH which is 3000 RPM. If we are flower sniffing, the bike will cruise at 55 at 2200 RPM, but has not guts to accellerate without a downshift. Typical shift from 4th to 5th is at 65 MPH which means cruising at about 2500 RPMs at 65.

Its another sunny day and the temps are 63 degrees at 9:20. It doesn't look like we are going to have a winter, and we really need the water.

I was back out in the canyons today and can refine this just a little. The RPM are lower than I said. at 55 MPH in 5th, the bike is lugging at 2000 RPM. At 65 2250 RPM. 70 is 2500 RPM, 75 MPH 2700 RPM and 80 is just under 3000 RPM.

I shift totally by sound, the worst thing you can do to an engine, is lug it. I honestly don't know what the speed is when I go into 5th, I listen and shift. It might be in the low sixties.
