    checking the oil level

I checked the cover on the left side of the bike for an owners manual and all that is there is a tool kit so I am out of luck on this.

I was assuming there would be a dipstick to check the oil level but all it is is a screw on cap. How do I know how much oil should be in there.

Plus it needs to be upright.
As long as it's not them that has to pay, no one really minds the debt.

That's easy. You have to remove the tank to change the plugs.

Place the kickstand on a block of 2x4, The bike is then upright enough to see the oil level.
