    '92 Intruder 1400 throttle response - FLAT

I have a '92 VS1400 I bought non-op as a project. Spent $1,000 for carb work, fork work and a load of sundry things. Went to pick it up, my mechanic said it was "kind of" running ok, but had a real dead spot cracking the throttle, and felt like it was only hitting on one cylinder (but both pipes were getting hot). I trailered it home (big mistake), barely kept it running well enough to get it in the garage. Tried a couple days later, couldn't even get it started I should have just left it with him....
Anyway, he claims the straight pipes (no mufflers) are the cause of the flat spot, because it lacks back pressure. I've worked on cars, trucks, and aircraft (with a couple bikes thrown in for good measure) all my life, and it acts like a vacuum leak from hell, or not getting fuel/extreme lean condition. I took it back the other day, told him I don't want it back until I can ride it home (65 miles). Has anyone run into this issue with an Intruder, or with straight pipes?

Straight pipes are illegal and obnoxious......but that alone will not cause a problem as severe as you have.
Even coupled with a "high flow" intake it won't be that bad.
Don't believe everything that you think.

If you paid the guy to do carb work and the best he can do is say its kinda running OK I would be asking for one of the following....my money back... or fix it properly and stop making stuff up. No need to get nasty with him just point out you have worked on many differernt engines and know that straight pipes would not affect an engine to this degree.

good luck I have a feeling you are going to need it.

They were on it when I bought it. I've already dropped over $1,000 on this bike, not including original purchase price. Once it's running to my satisfaction, I'll make a decision on the pipes, but I'm not dropping another pile of money..

Mikuni American Corporation thought you might want to educate yourself on carbs.a little education is like riding a motorcycle.
