I've been thinking of sponsoring a ride in. Bike Week ( Laconia Bike Week ) is the oldest bike week in the nation.

Once a year, NH turns into biker heaven for 10 straight days. Everything from the Loudon Classic races to the hill climbs are to be had. Washington Mountain is even closed to motorcycle traffic only. It's,,,well,,, a little nut's actually.

My shop is only a half hour from Loudon and the other festivities. I could probably put up a dozen or so camper trailers and twice that in tent type hard cores. Plenty of hotels and State Parks within 5 minutes of the shop.

If there was enough interest, I'd organize a ride in. It would have to be a full on "member ride in" to make it worthwhile. Heck, we even have trucks to use as chase vehicles and to run people back and forth to hotels and " Drinking Events ".

Heck, I'd even have our uniform company make up T-shirts and patches for the event.

If the Hell's Angel's can "Iron Butt" ride from California to attend, you'd think our members could manage to come.

Just a thought, I'm willing to organize and host it if people are willing to come.
" In the name of the Speedo, the Tach and the Holy Throttle, amen. "

My tentative plan: Leave St Cloud 5/23, noonish, and arrive outside of Rockford, IL or as far as I can get that day (500 mi). Spend the night in a podunk town in IL. Try to make Deals Gap on Sat 5/24. I am not sure of the exact miles from here to there, probably in the 1400 range so sat would be a 900 mi drive. Long drive so maybe another stop over at my aunts house in So. Fulton, TN. That would be another 500 to 600 mi from Rockford. Then make it on Sun. 5/25. Play it by ear from there. Probably leave on 5/29 or 5/30 and head back home.

So if this schedule fits anyone in my five state area lets hook up and find some twisties!!

Vinnie, I think you and whoever else is going to make a full week of this should make the call as to when. I'll try to schedule my trip for work in KY the week before. I'd probably ride with you guys for only a few days and it's possible I might not be able to get this coordinated with my work schedule anyways.

If you take all freeways it's 1025 miles from St Paul to Gatlenburg, so add 50 miles from St Paul to St Cloud, and another 30 miles from Gatlenburg to Deals Gap, and you are looking at about a 1100 mile trip, if you really want to you could do it in one day.

Both times I rode down there, I took two days for the trip down, and found that I was able to get far enough on the first day that it only took me half the second day to make it the rest of the way, and I was able to get a short ride in after I checked into my motel.

On one of my rides back I did it all in one day, but it took 18 hours, and I was quite tired by the time I got home.

I wasn't planing on going down there again this year, but lately my son has been showing some interest in making the trip, so if he can afford it, I might be able to go along with you. Put me down as a maybe.

That would be great if you guys could make it. I was planning it for the end of May mainly to be sure not to miss my sons graduation (I think that will be in early June, fingers crossed) Also, being somewhat familiar with the heat and humidity in TN I was thinking that late May would not be too hot.

So, if these dates work for you guys then lets do it. I would like to do it in two days since I really don't enjoy being in a hurry on a vacation. I could leave earlier on Friday, swing through MPLS/STP via 94 then maybe we could meet Thundurburd in or around Madison, Janesville, Beloit? Then I39 to 51? I57 to I24 to I75? Maybe there is a better way I just know that I don't want to get anywhere near Chicago!!

I ordered the 2.5gal G-Tank tonight so I am getting pumped!!! Cabin fever has now turned into a full on infection and the only cure is to ride!!

I have gone 600 mi in a day and I was a bit tired but that day was also cold, windy and I ran through a lot of light rain and mist. I think it is the cold that really gets me. Anyway you are what, 20 something? You should be able to show up an old fart like me!! LOL Even with the G-tank I will only be able to go at most 300 miles to gas up so there will be breaks. Comon Tricker!! YOU CAN DO IT!!

    Vinnie,

I'm going to try to coordinate this with a monthly trip I take down to a facility in Kentucky that I do for my employer, so I'd be trailering my bike down, not riding. I'd be in the Bowling Green area and leave for Deals Gap (or wherever we're going) either Friday or Saturday depending on what works out best.

You're right, you don't want to get near Chicago anywhere around mid afternoon on Friday. The route you have planned sounds like good idea. I hope you can find somebody who can make the ride with you.

I have enough flexibility with my schedule that I should be able to do this. So put me down as a pretty good maybe.

I have a brochure for lodging that I picked up at the cycle show. If this does work out I would think that lodging should be a priority? Maybe some have stayed here or know of a better place?

Yeah, I guess that's the official Deals Gap place. Deals Gap

Here's another Tail of The Dragon Website. It's the only road I know of that has it's own marketing department.

There are links to some interesting maps too.

Overall these are interesting sites to browse. There's probably not a bad road in the area to ride.

I'm 58, so I haven't been able to pass as a kid for some time now, but I still act like one sometimes.

There are two things you might want to consider before planing on staying right at Deals gap, first off, it's the place that everybody figures on staying, so unless you are willing to book your rooms in advance, you probably won't find an opening when you get there. Both times I was there, it was booked up. Second, the only food they have available right at the gap is hamburgers french fries, and chicken sandwiches. Any decent restaurant is about a 40 min (one way) ride.

All of the small Cities in the area are geared towards tourism, so finding a motel shouldn't be a problem.

Staying in the same room, and heading out in a different direction every day has it's advantages, like not needing to pack every day, and carry everything along with you, but moving to different motels every other day would open up more riding areas to you. Just something to consider.

One of the roads in the area that I have yet to ride is the Blue Ridge Parkway, and from what I hear it's a good one. From Deals Gap, it heads north towards DC, and from what I hear, it's a long days ride to ride it up & back in one day.

I'll check with a buddy of mine that was down there last year for the name of the place he stayed, as I recall, he said something about it being only $40.00 a night, and it was clean & quiet.

Thurdburd is definitely right about there not being any bad roads in the area. I love twisty roads, and after a full day of riding in and around Deals Gap, I actually got to the point where I was looking forward to straightaways.

tricker, if you want to go on this trip, my advice is just do it. If I'm on the trip, don't worry, I'll stop as often & as long as you want. I'm a firm believer in riding at a pace that everyone is comfortable with.
