V&H Straight Shots for the M50

I know several of you on the forum are running these. Do you notice the pipes sticking out farther than the stock pipes did, especially near the side cover with the M50 logo? I heard feedback from one person that the Cruzers did, but I wasn't aware the Straightshots did as well. Also, I noticed during the install, one of the mufflers needed a fair amount of percussive persuasion to get it on the head pipe. The instructions were not in the box, but thankfully all the hardware was. Anyone else notice these production flaws? Other than those minor problems, I love the look and sound of these pipes.

    Cruzers

My Cruzers installed perfectly and they are actually more of a low profile fit than the stock pipes which I really like. If they stick out farther than stock I'd say that something is definitely wrong. I hope they weren't misfabed in your case. Did you replace the gaskets and line them up flush?

I agree, mine are less obtrusive than the stockers.

So are mine, no doubt. What I'm refering to is where the head pipe turns out by the side cover, it goes out wider than the stock pipe. The stock pipe stayed tighter to the body in that area. Overall though, the V&H are definitly nowhere near as large as the stockers.

I have a bit of a gap between the heat sheild and the actual pipe on the front cylinder on my SS's, but i don't think it's sticking out any farther around the engine. There is likely to be a bit of a difference depending on manufacturing date on the pipes, but nothing significant

I can excuse the flip-flops, just not the socks with them

The third pic shows it pretty well what I'm referring to. Where it comes out past the side cover, it seems to hit my calf more then stock did(as the silver dollar sized strawberry on my calf attests to). I never ride with shorts, I was just moving the bike around the yard and got burnt. I wish I had a pic of the stockers from that angle, but I'm pretty sure they held a little tighter to the body of the bike, at least until they got past the seat. Thanks for the pics, at least I don't feel like I got the wrong pipes or screwed up the install. If someone has stock and can post a pic from the same angle as #3, I'd appreciate it. I'm surely not reinstalling to see...

I took some quick pics but then realized I have no way to upload them at this time. I'll post them tomorrow if no one else does. Anyway I can tell you this though; from a few inches forward of the passenger peg where the pipe connects to the muffler, it is pretty much out of view completely. You can't see it at all below most of the side cover. Sounds like your observation is accurate.

I also did some "sit tests" since I had shorts on. From your description I'm assuming you are talking about the upper pipe since you said under the cover with the M50 logo. It is almost impossible for me touch the upper pipe with my leg. My leg hits the lower one first and I had to use an unnatural position to touch the upper pipe. I never really noticed before but I could see how you could burn your leg on the lower pipe if your leg wasn't covered but it would be pretty unlikely, for me anyway, to touch the upper one. BTW I'm 6'2" 220 lbs with not overly large legs.

You're right, sitting isn't the problem. When I flat footed the bike, that hot shiny bastard hit my calf. Of course I guess being 5'7", my calf is a little closer then yours would be. And yes, it was the top pipe(rear cylinder).

Well now on top of the issues I had with the bend of the rear cylinder head pipe and the fit of the front mufflers over the head pipe, it now looks like I have a leak. It's on the top pipe, right where the muffler clamp is. Also, the mufflers are not exactly parallel, and the only way I can adjust them on the bracket if forward/backward. WTF???
