    95 suzuki intruder vs800 backfiring

95 suzuki intruder vs800 Backfires on deceleration. And when on the highway going 70mph in 5th gear it will stop firing in front cylinder after a few minutes! the bike had sit for two years before i got it. I've cleaned the carbs and changed the sparkplugs. front cylinder had a fouled plug. i had a feeling that I wasn't getting enough power from the bike. And was right since it was only firing in the rear cylinder. i changed the plugs and it was like a new bike with tons of power as compared to before. but now the bike backfires on deceleration and at high speeds will stop firing in the front. I'm thinking that the front carb is is running lean and needs tuned better to match the rear which is probably getting all the gas. any extra input would be appreitated.

Well it doesn't quite work that way.

You might have some spark leak on the front or a bad coil.
That often shows up first under load or at speed.

    Might have bad compression too.

Was the plug black and dry......or black and oily ??

Is the bike stock.....pipes and air input ??

You need to read ALL of what is in the replies.
Just because it works at idle doesn't necessarily mean that it is "good".
"Spark leak" refers to the plug wire, boot and coil.

If you can without too much trouble, swap the coils and plug wires to see if the problem moves........or run it in a DARK place for a minute and see if there are any sparks dancing around.

Got it. tried to up the front carb and still backfiring. so yes I'm definitely gonna check out the coil wires! do you have an idea as to the black and dry plugs? thanks for your input I will let you know the results.

    Sorry I didn't cover that.
It indicates a VERY rich mixture.
Could be caused by: too much fuel, not enough air or plug not firing all the time.
Black and oily often means worn rings.

Is this "back firing" a loud bang or more like a gentle little pop-pop ??

I am new here, but I have the same problem but... When it is cold, backfiring and I can hear the rear pipe not firing. Came to the conclusion that it is probably intermediately not firing. Changed the plugs and the rear cylinder was also black and dry.

I had a shadow that had an old worn out exhaust gasket on one cylinder. It was fine when it was cold, but when it would heat up, it would backfire upon deceleration. Once warmed up, you could feel the air coming out where the cylinder and exhaust met. It still ran fine, and i learned to live with the noise. Might wanna check that out.
