Haven't started in 2 years gas and battery still in

Looking for some advice on where to start. I hadn't had my 1996 Honda Shadow VLX 600 very long before I had to put it away. I haven't started it in 2 years. The gas is in the tank, oil is as well, battery is still on it and connected. It sat under a thin cover outside during a winter in Portland, Maine, and has been in a garage for this winter. I just ordered a manual from Haynes. Any tips on things that folks think need checking would be appreciated. I'm new to the mechanics game. Also specifically:

-Will a trickle charger help or should I just get a new battery?
-Are there other things I should do besides drain and refill the gas tank and an oil change and possibly replace the battery?
    -Are the wheels still ok?

    Thank you!

Replace as much of the gas as possible......including draining the float bowls on the carb(s) by opening the drain screws.
Put fresh gas in the tank, along with a double dose of Berrymans B12 Chemtool.
Put the petcock to PRIme and leave it there until some fresh gas runs out of the carb drain holes.....the close the screws.

I don't remember if it has a fuel pump or not. If it does, a petcock might not be present.

You should never use a cheap trickle charger.
An automatic battery tender is good......but it's too late now.
    Figure on a new battery.

The "wheels" are fine but the tires might be shot.
If they are over 5 years old, figure on replacing them too......AFTER you get it running.

Good luck. The carbs on the VLX tended to clog easily. You might need a professional cleaning.

P.S. Check the intake and exhaust for critter nests.

NOTE: Please post your questions here in only ONE sub-forum.
I have deleted the other one.
Don't believe everything that you think.
