1996 Honda Shadow charging problem

    1996 Honda Shadow charging problem

    Battery will not charge. Found fried connector from stator to recitifier, replaced stator and got 16 AC volts coming out of three wires to rectifier. Also replaced rectifier, but still only getting 13.85 DC volts at battery. Book says I should have 14.3 to 15.1 volts coming to battery from rectifier in order to charge it! I am at a loss as to what to do next. Maybe poor connections at connector site?

    might be different with a fully charged battery. i had a similar problem and it would only go to 13.99 v.

    STOP. You are done.
    Spec's have changed since that bike was built and likely your replacement rectifier/regulator is electronic and conforms to the newer spec's.
    The electronic regulators don't swing as wide as the old ones.
    A more or less constant 13.8 volts all the way from idle (if your idle speed is right) all the way up to riding speed likely is perfectly fine.
    You might even notice a slight drop as you rev the engine.

    Bottom line: Your battery will maintain it's charge with about 13.3 volts applied. Anything above that is charging.
    Don't believe everything that you think.

    Great.

    One small dis-advantage to the new changing specs. is that it won't fully charge a near to completely dead battery.
    So it's best to start out with the battery fully charged.

    I hook mine to a tender overnight once about every 90 days, even if it has been ridden fairly often.

    P.S. And just incase we have missed something here.......check your battery's resting voltage after sitting overnight a few times.
    It should stay no lower than 12.6 and a bit higher if AGM.
