Instrument Glare

The Stratoliner windshield has a glare problem at night because of its straight up position in relation to the instruments.
Has anyone changed the angle of the shield or has anyone tried the memphis shades or national cycle shields on this bike ?

Rifle

I talked to the folks at Rifle windshield co. and they are gonna modify their replacement shield that uses yamaha strato hardware.
They say the problem is that the shield is too upright & needs to be angled back.
Their shield is 3" wider on the bottom & 2" wider on the top.
I don't have my bike yet, just bought it from a different state.
I am gonna put the Corbin bags on & a different shield.
Is the glare near the top or bottom ?
If the shield was blue, grey,or gold would it glare less ?

Rifle

Let's hope that rifle figures it out.
They know that the angle is wrong.
It just kills me how companies like yamaha come out with otherwise pretty well engineered machines but something like this slips by them because they don't actually ride the bikes that they "engineer" ! :fight1:

I had the same kind of problem on my Valkyrie Tourer. The stock windshield was too tall AND the chrome gas cap would shine onto the windshield right in your face. :fight2:

Totally STUPID.........
If someone had ACTUALLY RIDDEN the bike they would have found this out.

I ended up dumpin' my Honda shield & gettin' a tinted Rifle Classic SS !

Look Over

The glare is about 2 to 3 inches below the top. Right where you look through. The shield is a Yamaha clear. I don't know that color would help.

Willie

Lucky for me that I always look OVER my windshield. :p

The angle needs a small change.

Yamaha should fix it free of charge. ;)

angle

There may be an easy fix. :fight1: Maybe washers and/or spacers.
Not on the motorcycle but on the hardware that comes off with the windshield.
I'll have to grab the shield and bring it in the house.
I have a buddie that has a small machine shop in his motorcycle shop.
He is full of ideas.
I will show him.
It doesn't have too move too far.

What,no faith in yamaha fixin' it ?

Yamaha should read these forums.

I just put the Rifle 17 1/2" on my Strat and the glare is gone. But the original glare was towards the top of the shield because of my height. By moving to a shorter shield, I eliminated the problem.

Wow,that's realy short.
When I was messin' with the stock shield, cutting a little off at a time I got down to 18" but found that to be too short w/buffeting.
I am VERY surprised that you would like a 17 1/2" !
You must be even shorter than me. I'm 5'7" with a 27" inseam.
Did you get the standard Rifle for the Stratoliner or the custom Classic SS ?
I ended up with the 20" height Classic SS and I love it !
I can look OVER the top yet there is NO buffeting.

I got the standard 17 1/2" clear. The top is even with my nose so it's perfect for me. I'm 5'8" with a 30" inseam. You have a longer torso so the 17 1/2 would be a bit short for you.

Corbin

I'm gettin' their bags soon !
I kind of don't have a choice since no one makes any great bags for this bike.
The Yamaha bags sucked big time. :thumbsdo:
I sold them on ebay.
All the leather ones look like they go on a horse or on Elvis bike. :horse:
I didn't like that the Cobin neo-liner fairing costs $1200 and I would still have to experiment with windshield height (more $$$) after I got it.
I did my experimenting by cutting the stock shield.
I then had Rifle make me a custom one for a little over $200.

Let me know how the Corbin Fairing works out, there may be one in my bikes future.

You should be looking over the windshield not through it. The top of the windshield should be about even with the tip of your nose. My bike came with the tall windshield. I took it to Thunder Beach this last fall when the bike was new. On the way back it rainded very heavily! The rain was being blown accross the road from the side. With rain covering my face shield and my windshield I could barely see the tail lights of the bike in front of me. Very Dangerous! I have since cut my windshield down.
