So I have been hearing this grinding noise down below when I let off the gas to slow down. When I pull the clutch in the noise goes away. You can really here it when I am downshifting through the gears. Yesterday it was doing it a lot... Not a very pleasing sound. Thoughts on this anyone?
I have one of the first 06 liners with close to 30K miles and the third set of tires. Bridgestone this time. Looking to get a 2010 super liner this spring. Zero problems so far. Was at the dealer for the first oil change and the three sets of tires. That's it.
If you are in a turn like an entrance to the x way or next to a concrete wall. Where the noise from the bike will reflect. You can here a wine or howl coming from the front wheel. Its like the old toy tops. The harder you spin the top the louder it howls. The same with the front wheel.

As an update, I disassembled the middle drive gear, loosened the belt and checked for wear. I had a small amount of wear on the teeth of the shaft and and middle drive gear. Lubed it up good and reassembled. Torque to spec and then reset the belt tension appropriately. Rode about 500-600 miles round trip to the shore and haven't had a problem or noise since. I hope it lasts. If not, I'll ride it until something pops up.
Not sure if I mentioned it earlier either...but my local dealer said he's heard of the nut coming loose but hasn't seen anything from Yamaha. Called a service rep and he said he's never heard of it.
Well after 40K miles I decided to check the drive nut. There has not been any noise or any strange vibes. The nut was loose and out about 1/8 in. from the hub. I also had the dust inside the area. I cleaned out the area and reassembled the nut using the red lock tight. I also re-staked the nut. One thing that I thought was strange was the fact the original stake was 1/2 inch short from what the new stake is. It is my guess is that the nut was never tight from the factory. This is why the nut did not stay. I had no noise and I think that was because the belt was perfectly in-line and was tracking correctly. I have not ridden it yet I just serviced the bike and need to pick up new plugs tomarrow.
i had the noise when i had 31k on my bike and i tighted the nut and now at 46k yamaha is replacing the shaft and nut and nut and bolt and gasket. lucy my warranty runs out next month
Don't think you will hear from the OP or the last one before you. I would do what all the previous posters did and check the drive nut...that or make sure both feet are on the pegs lol....goood luck.
Oh well, thanks for your reply. There drive system is different on my bike and nothing was loose. I think it might be a component if the clutch making that noise. Will need to pull it apart and have a look.
Cheers
You might want to post in the Yamaha section ...I'm sure someone there will be able to help....it sounds from the original posts that the transmission may be at fault but later posts suggest it is driveline...you need to isolate which it may be it to be able to make some headway.
I rode my bike yesterday and it sounded normal at least it seem normal. I started out today and started hearing a grinding noise when decellerating and down shifting. I pulled the cover off the drive pulley to find the nut on the drive shafted almost completely backed off. it appeared that the nut had been notched at some point, but appeared it was removed and not re-notched. I re-installed the nut and notched it it thoroughly. I am worried that the belt may be too tight as there is very little movement in the belt. I inspected the belt and it appears to be in excellent condition and I can only imagine that the belt is on its original setting as there is only 22k miles on the bike. The bike seems to be riding just fine now that the nut has been reinstalled, but I will have the belt checked by the dealer to avoid any issues. Those of you that have experienced what seems to be a tight belt can you confirm that the belt was infact too tight?
My 06 had begun to whine in third over the last several months and has progressively gotten louder. It has 21K on it.I looked around the net and found many others with 06 & 07 liners having the same whine as well as gear failure all together. I called one of the dealerships I have used and the service manager told me he had just done a overhaul and delivered an 06 with the same problem. $1800.00 to replace this part and all related bearings, gaskets and such. GEAR, 3RD PINION, P/N 99999-03864-00 (replaces 1D7-17131-01-00) . I said this much be a faulty part to which he said he did not know. What else would cause a part like this to fail after only 21K?
I am taking my bike to another dealer I have used today. The service manager there said he had not seen this problem yet and that he would call Yamaha once it was inspected and see what they tell them.
If interested I will fine another report after I talk to him.
I know several people who own various model Yamahas who complain about the transmissions. They start to whine a little, then howl, then grind. Whinning starts fairly early, and failures usually do not happen until about the 50K mark. The liner seems to suffer from this on a fairly common basis. But as the bike is long out of warranty, and it is not a safety issue that the government forces them to recall, Yamaha pretty much does nothing about it. My buddy's started to whine at 25K miles, but rather than spend nearly 2 grand he just ignored it. At 45K miles he traded the bike in, as it was now so loud he could no longer ignore it.
