I have an 07 roadliner. I just bought it used with 3000 miles. There was cobra short drags on there. I could tell it was lean because of the psuedo knock it had. I got a Fi2000r and no knock, no nothing...it was awesome until the motor was really warmed up ~15minutes then there is a slight knock coming off idle in first and second but soon as it gets a few rpms...gone. My suspicion is that it was lean for too long and somehow developed a small exhaust leak that only manifests itself when fully warm? Does this sound rational?
Other than that with the Fi2000r it sounds great and pulls great all over. If a piston was melted or something it wouldn't run good then make some noises when warm.
After dialing in with the Fi2000r the motor doesn't run near as hot so I am sure it was lean.
Logical maybe but probably not right.
If it has valves that are adjustable, get them checked.
And then before you do anything else drastic, try a couple of tankfuls of "premium" gas.
You may be hearing "spark knock".
Unbaffled short pipes are just one BIG exhaust leak !!!
The knock off idle is the nature of the beast!!! I have two Roadstars, and they both have the knock off idle. It is not a sign of being lean, or low octane fuel.. they just do it... Many miles of riding on mine and no problems..... keep in mind it is an aircooled push rod motor, with no water jackets to deaden the sound , therefore you hear a lot of engine noise with the big V-Twins... THinking of buying a Roadliner is why I joined this forum. Need to get some info.
Just curious. do you have the O2 sensor hooked up? without the O2 sensor hooked up the bike is blind. it will run incorrectly for sure. the stock bikes do not run lean at all. you can prove this by looking at your own spark plugs. mine run dark tan to tan, a little rich. if you are lean they will be white - grey or no carbon at all. I you have taken the O2 sensor out try to put it back in. the bike will have a better chance of running better.
