Question Suzuki GZ Marauder 2005 125cc - Jerking/Noise in second and first gears.

Hey guys. I'm new to this motorbiking lark, managed to pick up my Marauder for cheap, but just this week it's started jerking and making a "thunk" sound in my first and second gear but didn't do this when I first got the bike.

Now, the guy i bought it from said:
"It’s just recently had new bore, piston, piston rings, valve stem seals and tires. It runs perfect, the new bore/piston still needs braking in since I’ve only done 500km will be rising as still riding "
I've added another 500km onto that, but i don't know what/if there's anything i need to do about that or if it's why the bike is jerking

Other forums seem to suggest I would need to look at my gear sprocket and chain? I'll get some pictures tomorrow when i'm back from work.

Thanks in advance for any help you could give out.

    Regards,
    Michael McGrath

I normally consider 500 miles as being sufficient for a break-in period after a rebuild. With your's at 1000km = 621 miles, you're probably good to go there. It would be wise to change the oil since the break-in is pretty much complete (thereafter the oil change can be done at longer intervals, every 3,000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first is a decent schedule) and on some bikes, an oil change makes the shifting smoother.

If that doesn't eliminate the jerking/clunking, next thing I'd do is a full clutch adjustment.

Most likely this is perfectly normal.
Most ALL metric bikes with constant-mesh transmissions will make a clunk when leaving Neutral and engaging either 1st or 2nd.
This will be much worse if the clutch is dragging a bit.
It usually is most noticeable right after a cold start.

By all means check the chain and sprockets for wear though.
Or more accurately, have a qualified shop check it. Most riders can't recognize a worn chain.......until it breaks.
Chain and both sprockets need to be changed as a set, always.

The sound it makes is during travel, not the engaging sound from swapping gears.
I will certainly get the oil changed, it's something I meant to do anyway.

I noticed today, that it is worse if she's been sat in wet weather (Aka at work). Today even my third gear was jerking a little, but not making the clunking sounds.
Something else I noticed is that if i'm -really- gentle and slow on the throttle it's fine, but trying to get away normally causes the sound.

My friend commented that, with it being worse in the wet, perhaps it was a carb issue?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand. Full clutch adjustment? I am sorry to sound like a novice. But I am soooo.

    Thanks for the advice guys

Check the easiest and cheapest.....and most likely things first.
In this case, check for too much slack/wear in the chain.

Then if the noise is accompanied by a surging from the engine, put some fuel system cleaner in with the gas.

Is your air cleaner stock ?
Are you leaving the choke partly ON until it warms up good ??

Thanks everyone to the replies, they've been alot of use and given me plenty to go on.

Having spoken with the handiman at my work, who has ridden bikes most his life, he took one look at it and said; "Yeah... Try loosing the slack from your chain will help"

Turns out i had 3inches worth of slack on my chain...
Good job me. Ontop of it now, reset and she's working no issue.

    Thank you folks

    That's good......maybe.

With that much slack in the chain, it might be WAY PAST worn out; sprockets too.

I strongly encourage you to have a shop inspect it.
Having a chain break going down the road can be BAD for your health.
