Today it finally was nice outside, 62 degrees F right now, and I got home early enough before it got dark from work to ride. Now I had an good hour to ride, I enjoyed every minute of it. I can see why now people like riding with other people also, just more fun.

Also there is a big difference between 45mph on a bike and 45mph in a car. That was the posted speed limit on the road ride outside my apartment.

Too cool! A nice ride on a nice spring day...what could be better?
I only rode to grad school and back today, about 30 minutes total. But I rode from Atlanta to St. Louis, MO friday, then to Memphis, TN and back to Atlanta Sunday, so I got plenty of riding in this week.

. . . and THERE YOU GO!!

It was easy, eh? Keep up the good work. The way I learned confidence was to keep on riding every day that I could until the controls just became natural to me.

After you get used to riding it, don't spend too much time exploring the deep depths of the throttle. That'll get you a ticket . . . or worse. Rather, find a nice curvy road and give IT a whirl. Don't try to be Rossi and take it fast, but concentrate on smoothness and holding your intended line. Lean that bike.

The way I got comfy leaning was to take a corner at a speed that I knew was safe, and then I'd ride it tight . . . meaning I'd hold a tighter line through the corner than I had to. That way, I always had plenty of boo-boo room in the lane ('cause I was taking it at a comfortable speed), and I could lean the bike farther than I needed to, to sort of get used to the lean.

Keep your head horizontal and let your body lean with the bike. Shoulders, hips and all. Just leeeeeaaaaaaann into the corner, while countersteering.

Yup, it was all superslab on the way up, as I was in a hurry...Atlanta to Chattanooga, then Nashville, Paducah, and St Louis. I had more time on the way back, so I took state and US highways to Memphis, and then Burmingham. It was raining in Alabama, and it was getting late, so I jumped back on Interstate 20 to Atlanta.
Good ride though- not sunny, but warm, and as always I met some great people along the way. One woman in an SUV, probably 60-62, pulled up to me in Missouri at a gas station and struck up a conversation, wishing me a safe trip back to Atlanta, and telling me about her wild days traveling the country on the back of a motorcycle back in the 1960s...great fun!

All this talk about longer rides got me thinking about my first short trip.
It was a suzuki gz250. Try spending an hour and a half on one of these things at 65mph. By the time I got home my back and legs hurt so back I didn't get on it again for a week. But I don't regret it. Now I just wish I could remember where that highway was so I could take my marauder on it.

i really like the social aspect of riding a bike. meeting other bikers, and just the interest that riding a bike generates.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting that it is still winter for a lot of the country...it was 55 in St. Louis, but I bet it was in the single digits up in WI. I grew up in New Hampshire, but Atlanta is as far North as I care to live.
Down here in the sunny South, I have over 8000 miles since Nov 1. :)
