I use motorcycle specific oil... currently I am running Mobile 1 V-twin synthetic (very expensive - $7.99/quart) but I have run Havoline 4 stroke 10-40 with out any problem.

some friends that run car oil without any problems and some experience clutch slippage.

Then there is Amsoil oil that everyone loves but finding it in stores is difficult.

Change the oil is VERY easy, especially if you have a lift, otherwise you may need the curb to lift the front up a little

Am I required to take my new bike back to the same dealer for that first service? I dont like that dealership...(retards) and would like to take it somewhere else for that 600 mile service...

I ask because they made it sound as if I was required to take it back to them, because thats where I bought it....

I just had my 1000 km service done, at home, using the Clymer manual.
It took me about 4 hours for my Savage, but I'm sure everything is in good order. I used the Suzuki oil filter and Castrol GTX 10W-40 API SL, but not "energy efficient".
I figured I saved about $100, so I made $25/hour and I enjoyed doing it.

I don't think it is specifcally Suzuki dealers. My local Suzuki dealer in Lexington, KY is very good. Excellent service, prices and communication. Across the street at the Honda dealer, if you walk in to the showroom you are an annoyance to them. Hmmmmnnn, maybe that's why a GZ 250 is under my butt instead of that Rebel. I'll look for a bigger bike this fall or next spring. I won't inflict my business on the Honda dealer.

I did my first oil change myself, can't get in for 600 mile service til next Wed. (already have 825 miles on the clock). Only took about an hour for oil and filter change, no problems at all. Just remember the drain plug goes clockwise to loosen it.

For Savage you need an oil pan (I used a painting pan), a 4mm hex key and a 14 mm wrench. You may want to have a plier handy for the oil fill-up cap, too.
Oh, for Savage to loosen the oil plug you turn counter clock wise!
