Hi there. I own a 1985 DR 600 S, and I've got no sparks. I have a new coil, plugs are fine, new stopswitch, I even winded up the power source coil on the magneto about three years ago. The old one was burnt for some reason. But today the bike is dead. No sparks whatsoever. I've hired a guy to look at it, and he (using a regular multimeter I think) came to the conclusion that my pick-up-coil was bad. His suggestion was to buy a new stator/magneto (I'm not very familiar with the correct english terms here, but I hope you understand where I'm going...), a new regulator and a new CDI-unit. That sounds expensive, and even a bit unnecessary. Do anyone have an idea or tip to share with a frustrated norwegian?

Regards from Terje

I'm going through the same problem. I would start by checking the resistance on the ignition coil. should be close to 10,000ohms, I think. If it's good, then maybe it's the Cdi. But those are very expensive. I would make that the last thing to change. Also, doesn't hurt to check factory specs and put in new spark plug (maybe you have the wrong one in there). Also, check simple stuff... Make sure the motor is grounded, and the coil is grounded, and all wiring is ok.

I bought a hard starting 1975 Honda XL350. A new set of points and coil wire solved my problems. Try to find documentation on what the resistance should for the stator. I had thought at first that the stator was my problem, but my multimeter told me otherwise. Do what shaolin suggests, check the simple stuff one step at a time.

Thanks for your response. I bought a secondhand pickup-coil and a coil, both with correct values when using an "ohm-meter". So - now I've got a spark, but it's tiny, and my "mechanics" tells me the colour is wrong. So now I've ordered a new CDI-unit from another part of the country. This is my big, big tip to all of you, take the time to compare prices, I sent a lot of e-mails and that paid out. (Can you say that...???) Some dealers wanted as much as 3500 NOK (about 280 £), most dealers wanted around 3000 NOK (about 240 £), but the cheapest one I found charged me 1900 NOK (about 155 £). So, check several places before you spend money on your old? bikes. But, back to the subject, even though I soon am going to insert my new CDI-unit I'm not sure whether it will work or not. But I keep my fingers crossed. I'll return with the result... :D

Yeeees, I'm back in business. My -85 DR 600 S is alive...!!! What I did to make things work was: Change the pick-up-coil, the CDI-unit and the "main" coil. It's been two years since last time the bike was working properly, so guess who's exited...)

Good look to all of you guys who's still struggling, I've been there myself.

Hi Terje, i had same problem on my 85 DR,after 2 months of frustrating fiddling it was a simple fix.remove right hand sidepanel to reveal rubber boot on wiring loom, disconnect black and yellowire, which runs from cdi to kill button, try starting it,if it works run new wire from connector to kill button.worked on mine with no more probs.hope it works for you,all the best. kevy, in wales
