First off, I'm NOT mechanically inclined.. Anyway, I have a 2002 katana 750 with 10,000 miles. I took it out today for first Tim in months.. It was a little hard to start but it ran fine.. After about 15 miles it sputtered out like it ran out of gas.. Gas was low but had a buddy bring me two gallons.. Bike will start and idle fine, even on full choke, but if you try to give it any gas, it sputters out and dies.. Anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong?
Probably the carbs. If you are lucky running some carb cleaner thru it may work. If not the carbs will have to be disassembled and cleaned. Get some Berrymans B-12 Chemtool to add to the gas. A double dose since you let it sit for months. Give it time to work. this is not an instant fix but easier than carb cleaning.
If that doesnt work suspect the rubber parts...esp the diaphragms which may have tiny pin holes in them from sitting. I suspect AloRapter is probably correct though and enough time needs to be allowed for it to work.
Crummy gas is the culprit. I carry small bottle of Mercury outboard gas treatment. Treats like 100gal. of gas. Can't use too much, says so on the bottle.
I use empty bottle of Murine ear oil. It has screw on top and tip can be unplugged to put your own go juice inside. Lasts like 15 fill ups. Have had no trouble with my carb since. Plus most of these chemicals coat the inside of fuel tanks.
True but read back through the posts and you see where I use Mercury outboard motor gas treatment. Sea Foam is another fine product. Neither is a carb cleaner. These products claim that varnish from today's gas will not materialize inside a fuel system.
I have never used chemtool. Lumped it in with STP etc. Still have a bump in carb since last clean out. I will try it.
It's pretty easy to tell which ones won't melt plastic.
Product is in plastic bottle.
That's a good point.
But the logic isn't perfect 'cause there are different kinds of plastic.
My opinion of SeaFoam is a bit different than yours. It is snake oil in my book; the marketing claims that it does too much, some things that don't even NEED to be done at all.
Berrymans B12 Chemtool and Gumout carb cleaner are both good products for cleaning carbs and injectors. They claim to do only ONE thing.......and are a good bit cheaper than SeaFoam too.
Berrymans B12 and Gumout are not available here so I use a small amount of injector cleaner every few months and have had no problems to date. Having said that all my bikes are fuel injected and carbs a thing of the past....err except on my edger, mower and chainsaw.
