Hi new to the forum here.

I bought a used 2007 gs500 last summer and road it till september when I had to put it away because I was leaving for school. I cleaned it, changed the oil, ran some fuel stabilizer through it, disconnected the battery, and put it away on its center stand till last week.

I tried to start it and the battery was completely dead. I hooked it up to my car's battery with the engine off and tried starting it. It turned over a few times but no luck. We also tried to start it by popping the clutch but still no luck.

Is the battery not any good after sitting all winter (and some of spring)? Will I need a new one?

Also, is it possible that the carbs are "gummed up"? Is there any other issues I may need to address in order to get it running other than the battery?

Thanks

Yes, probably......to both questions.
The battery is ~4 years old and letting it go completely dead has probably killed it for good.
You might be able to use if for a short while with a thorough, slow charge but likely it won't last.
The new one needs to be charged before use too.

Hopefully with a LOT of choke and NO throttle (and maybe a little shot of starting fluid) you should be able to get it going enough to use carb cleaner IN the gas to get the carbs cleaned out. If you do get it running, a shot or two of carb cleaner down the throats wouldn't hurt either. I like Berrymans B12 Chemtool or Gumout. Either one may take several runs over a few days to work best.

If the plugs have never been changed, now would be a good time for that too.

And check the pipes and air box for "critter" nests.

Good luck.

I made a mistake in the title...Its a 2009 not 2007. Still think the battery is done?
Yes, probably.......but give it a good charge and see.

**I** certainly wouldn't trust it too far from home.

In the future, you need a battery tender for the storage period.
An AGM type battery is highly recommended.
If fully charged, they don't need a tender for up to 3 months.
