I was riding last night when I pulled up next to a guy on a gixxer 600. We went for it for about 100 feet and he blew me out of the water. I expected it but it seemed a little to fast. At the next light he told me that he changed his sprocket down 1 gear and installed a retard eliminator. He began to tell me what to do with my katana 600 to make it less of a terd but the light changed and I never saw him again, I wasnt willing to ride 100mph on a 40mph road. I was thinking about changing the sproket, but will I need to replace the chain?
Any ideas form some katana owners?

Edit: Removed due to varchild's personal insecurities. It was good, honest advice suggesting how he might mature as a rider. He seems to have some misunderstandings about what is honest and realistic and what is negative.

Hmm I don't know too many people that bought a sport bike and didn't start doing mods the first week. I didnt say I was looking for my kat to be a drag bike I simply asked kat owners if they could reccomed any mods they might have done. Next time instead of offering your negative opinions try to answer the question at hand, Cause you know what they say about opinions  . And shows what you know about Katanas', Back in the day they were the AMA super bike champions, a few mods and they will become a different animal! Knowing which ones to do is another story.

Me? personal insecurities? ah ya LMAO! I have been riding for 13 years. Up until now I have always had crusiers. Bored to death I just got into sport bikes, so if I have a question about a sprocket or anything why a negative attitude? Or are you gonna call me a squid because I wanna go fast? Why would someone buy a sport bike if they didn't wanna go fast! I dont have an issue with your advice, I have issues when people answer a question with a totally unrelated opinion. If you don't own a katana or don't know anything about them then why the 2 cents? Save them, I am sure you need them more then I!

My brother owned one. The Katana isn't a highly modifiable bike. There isn't much aftermarket. I tried to offer suggestions.

And don't you dare put words in my mouth. I didn't call anyone anything, so shut your cocky piehole already.

You have too many rules. I'm gone.

Why the hostility varchild? Granted I didn't read Rowdy's first post because it was edited, but he is still very knowledgeable about all things on two wheels. Ever heard that respect is a two way street?

For the sake of fairness, I'll attemp to recreate the original post:

You might learn to use the bike as it was intended, and not worry about stoplight drag races ( ). If you wanted a drag bike, the Katana was the wrong choice.
There was more, but I can't recall the rest. None of it was intended to be insulting.

As a Kat owner, I'll chime in. True, there is not as much of an aftermarket as say for a Gixxer, but there is still plenty to be had.

The Holeshot full exhaust system looks nice. I know a company makes a header, but the name escapes me, that way you can get the slip-on you want and not be held at Holeshot's mercy. A jet-kit is another big power booster, but you will lose some top end HP, so you have to decide what's more important to your riding style. You can mess with the sprokets as well, but since I don't know much about it I'll let someone else fill you in. When Katanaplanet.com is back up and running, you'll find all this information in depth.

While it is true the Katana isn't the best for all out straight line speed (only in the bike world, it'll smoke any car on the road), remember this, any bozo can go fast in a straight line. In the twisties, where it really matters, in my opinion, is where it becomes the rider and not the bike.

Enjoy your bike, you made a real nice choice, if I don't say so myself.

TYVM for the info. I agree, the twisties are where it's at. Mainly I was wondering if doing mods like changing the sprocket was worth it for over all performance. I am really not a red light king on straight line rider. Any monkey with good credit can get a busa and go fast in a straight line, hell the bike will ride it self..I was thinking about doing something to add a little more pep when I roll out of the corners.

I am currently riding a '04 kat 600. Good bike to learn on and also a very capable machine in the right hands. Sure its heavy and underpowered (78hp baby) but still its easy to ride and still fun enough to get you in trouble. First off i would say ditch the mcadams (stock tires if you still have them) they are junk. Secondly open up the exhaust system (hindle and yosh come highly recomended by most kat riders) at the same time as this rejet the carbs and get it properly tuned. There is also a timing retard mod that is good for a couple of hp and quicker warm ups. Thats about it on basic bolt-ons for the kat. After that its all appearance. check out www.braada.com for a sweet solo cowl. also check out www.clearalternatives.com for clear lenses and LEDs. AND HACK THAT REAR FENDER. After that its all rider skill which you can develop plenty of with the kat. If you can rail a kat a Supersport would be now problem. hmmmmmm check out this site http://www.motorcycleanchor.com/katana/upgr/KatanaUpgrades.html That guy has crazy amounts of info. Also if you havent already look in www.katanaplanet.com. Good luck and keep the rubber side down.
