I see no search button so I decided to make a new topic. I'm looking for some armor :) mainly a jacket and gloves, then i'll move up to pants ( already have boots ). What are some good, but not to pricey brands? I looked at firstgear and liked their prices then read about 'em and realized they're half nylon. If possible, include websites too. I've got the money for it and i wanna go ahead and order it :) Thanks for the help.

It depends. most manufacturers like firstgear, joe rocket, and alpinestars vary according to what kind of jacket you want. Some are totally see through mesh jackets and some are textile jackets (fake leather) like the first gear diablo jacket I want to buy. However, you can also get full 100% real leather jackets that are about $400 from first gear. all depends on what you want. I wouldn't get a non-brand name though cause they usually suck. especially when concerning safety. I do like the vega helmets.. they are kinda non-name brand but they make a great snell approved helmet.

Are you saying you'll only buy leather? Good quality textile gear isn't always a bad choice.

BTW - search

Came off my bike on Tuesday at about 20mph wearing a fabric jacket. Pedestrian walked out in front of me, did a lousy emergency stop and lost the front end. I only slid a few yards on my front but it has worn through the material. Even a poor quality leather jacket has provided more protection in the past so I don't think I'll be buying another one.

hey louis, how's the bike, and more importantly how are you?

knowah - see if you can get a discount buying all the gear you want (inc pants) at once. hopefully you'll save some $$ and you'll be fully protected sooner.

i am shopping for a new leather jacket, in fact i know the one I want, alspinestars TZ-1. current Aus v US $ exchange rate is making it very cost effective for me to buy from the 'states.

I have found one retailer prepared to ship overseas, Bikerzone, anyone had experince with them at all?

Louis is right about the leather jackets, came off my bike on friday at 40-50 mph, barely much of a scuff on the leather jacket and no damage to the bottoms or myself. I came out afterwards with the impression of thankefulness i didn't skimp on the protective wear and bought quality leathers.

I'm alright except for a wrenched shoulder. Should be back on the bike in a couple of weeks.
Bike's not too bad. A new front mudguard, clutch lever and indicators will sort it. Hate to think what it would've cost repairing a new, fully faired bike though.

try this site....

i buy my gears from here www.tonker.com...i think this site has very good prices on their items. one thing you need to do to check the final price is to add whatever item you are looking at to cart. when you do that, the actual price will be cheaper. try it....i think you will find it worth your while....

Textile gear is great for wet days and textile mesh is fantastic for HOT days. Unlike leather, if you take a fall in textile gear, it's imperative that you replace it. If you know it's going to be dry and you want to get spunky, dress in padded or armored leathers for protection.

I have gear from Joe Rocket, First Gear and Alpinestars. They're all well made and seem to perform well. About the only difference is that First Gear and Alpinestars gear appear to be have their seams constructed in a way that may possibly prove slightly stronger in a slide.

I also have an armored and padded XPert-brand naked leather classic cruiser jacket that's beautifully made and sewn together meticulously with kevlar thread. I'd consider it an "off-brand" but it doesn't give up much to the brand name gear in the way of materials and construction quality. It also runs in the $400 range so it's not one of the cheap, no-name, $99 specials, either...

For most gear, you generally get what you pay for.
