Had a bike 20 years ago. Got married. Want another bike. Sat on a Marauder in the store and thought I found it. Spouse says no way, she doesn't want to change my diaper when I've become a vegetable after first accident. Friends say buy it, ask forgiveness later. Advice from those who have experienced this?

[Ricky Ricardo voice]'Splain to Lucy tha you need tha dommed bike, mang[/Ricky Ricardo voice]

If you've got the cash (or credit), sit her down and talk about it. Tell her you're not getting any younger. Give something up if you have to. Stop golfing/fishing/sewing/monkey trapping/etc. every Saturday morning and start riding. Use the 'flat spot in my life' line if you have to.

I got lucky when I got married. She either doesn't like me ( ) or doesn't care either way ( ). . . which is nice ( :D ).

Jon, for the sake of harmony, don't buy first and ask forgiveness later...but keep plugging.

I'm in an odd situation in that I'm female and I just got my first bike. Hubby DOESN'T ride and didn't want a bike either. But I kept on...and eventually got my ride.

Read (out loud) every bike ad for new and/or used bikes. Talk about bikes. Point out bikes on the road. Put your wife through the MSF. Maybe she'll learn to lighten up and feel safer about bikes.

Just my 2 cents worth...

Definitely. You want to make life hard for yourself? Show up wearing your selfish bastard costume, complete with a new, unapproved bike. That'll do it.

You need to work on her, nicely. If she is truly understanding, she'll see where you're coming from.

Bear in mind: WE ARE A BIASED AUDIENCE!!

u know whats ironic? Women love men on bikes. They think they hot and sexy risk takers and whatever. Yet AFTER THEY TRAP YOU...and MARRY YOU...its all about CHANGING HIM. My g/f said great to a bike and she even wants one now after i taught her to ride on mine, BUT the one thing she WONT LET ME GET...is a CORVETTE. She has had 4 family members DIE in corvettes because they are nothing but fiberglass. Which is fine with me i like the older 57-62 corvettes myself.

My God, how many other enjoyments/activities have you foresworn over the years because "spouse says no way?" You need to grow a set and do what you want. My wife and I have different interests and hobbies, and neither of us tries to discourage the other from any of them. Some of mine, like bikes and guns, can be dangerous. So what? We're both adults. If my wife decided she wanted to take up skydiving, I'd support that choice all the way.

I got lucky.... I brought the subject of a bike up 8 months ago. My wife said "sounds like fun". I had ridden alot when I was younger. I bought a '03 Katana 600 2 weeks later. She still thinks it's great...

What a great collection of responses! Each one has some truth/humor to it. Yes I should have more cojones on this one but I know it would be shaking the foundations too much. I'm workin' all angles, and will get there. If we werent' in as much debt and needing a new car right now I bet I would be able to swing it w/her. But I just got a raise I haven't told her about and am going to shop for some disability insurance for vegetable care. Will keep you posted and a heartfelt thanks for all the responses!!

They say that you're 26 times as likely to die on a bike as in a car.

Remove any chance of riding drunk.
Lower the odds of brain damage by wearing a helmet.
Prevent most road rash by wearing gear.
Prevent most accidents by getting some training.
Prevent an unplanned Earth orbit by purchasing an appropriate bike.

Now you've pared that number down considerably. Talk to her and assure her that not only will you do these things, but that you'll BOTH have a heck of a lot of fun on it.

And ignore those of failed marriages who badmouth the institution. They blew it, but that doesn't mean you have to.

I apologize if my earlier post seemed harsh. Your situation just struck a chord with me because I've "been there, done that" with wife #1. Interestingly, she had no problem with motorcycles; guns were her hot button (along with just about anything else I wanted to do that she didn't approve of or which didn't include her). After we divorced 20-some years ago I swore I was done with women. That lasted 6 months until I met my current wife. The contrast is like night and day.

Jon, has your wife ever ridden? On the back or otherwise? Has she known someone close to her that has gotten hurt, or worse in a motorcycle accident? Those are some questions that may help us in giving advice too.

It'll be harder to convince her if she has personally been affected by a motorcycle accident in the past. :?

The biggest piece of advice that I have, is to just keep eluding to how happy it would make you to have a motorcycle. She may surprise you one day and out of the blue tell you that you should get the bike. You should take the MSF class, just to show her that you are serious about doing things safely...

...oh...and maybe get a leather motorcycle jacket and model it around the house...she might like that!!

Nut,

Are you alluding that I do not have a grasp on the english language???

If so, I'm going to elude this comment by changing the subject to your favorite...Beer.

How did I do that time, right?
