Heres the deal, I finally convinced my parents to get me a bike. However there is only one problem i told them that i prefered a used bike something to get used to but i havnt been able to find one. Ive tired ebay, cycle trader etc.... My dad came to me and said "i will get you a bike but im only going to buy you a new one" I know that i should learn on something small first then work my way up but hes not going to buy me something small hes basically saying either i get a R6 or a gixxer 6 or get nothing. I have no credit because i have no credit cards so i need a co-signer. What should I do?

Keep working on your Dad. Explain to him why you need a smaller used bike...it's the safety of his son after all...Bring him over to this and other forums as well; educate him about biking and he will understand.

//Pick out what you want and go with it. Any bike beats no bike, and new sportbike beats used anything in terms of desirability. Look at the ZZR600 and SV650 as well. ZZR600 has the look you want, while being more rideable than full-on racebikes. IF you really do ride as safely as you preach here on the board, I don't think you'd get in trouble with anything, but then you also would never need anything more than a Ninja 250. Think about it, if you don't break the speed limit why do you need a 160mph motorcycle?

//Speaks volumes that your parents even have any input, much less veto power. When I was your age I had been in the Army for 6 years (yes, I really did go in when I was 17) and my parents had no say in anything I did or bought, nor did I need their assistance. Fast cars, fast motorcycles, automatic weapons, and whatever other toys appealed at the time were completely a function of my discretion and E6 income.

//Completely off topic, but you may want to rethink your priorities and make independance your focus instead of a motorcycle. No offense intended.

At twenty three, I had been on my own for 5 years and working on my third sport bike, all of which I purchased myself.

Kinda a tough question Novaz...........

I tried to get a bike when I was 18 and my parents said !NO! And they told me if I did it without them then I would have to move out.

Lets just say I'm 20 now, with my own apartment and a bike :D .

When you say you have no credit do you mean you'd be willing to sign a loan for one? I had a cell phone bill in my name(less than a year at that point in time) and a Lowe's store card with the worst credit and limit imaginable. I applied AT the store for a brand new Ninja EX500 last summer, and got aproved for 5,000 dollars thorugh Kawasaki financing. I don't know what you have registered in your name (I hear that cars regestered in your name are good credit too) if anytihng at all but there is a possibility you could get a loan.

If this is not anything you were willing to do, talk to your Dad a little more in a serious respectful manner.

-If you want a smaller bike like a 500, let him you don't want a 600 to get going too fast before you've gotten experience on how to handle a bike.
-Maybe you COULD get a 600, but make it a Katana, SV650 or something with 600+cc's but not straight out power.
-This is a bike that YOU want. If he's willing to buy a bike for YOU, why can't he buy what YOU want? Tell him you are being as rational as possible when looking. (P.S. sometimes with smaller cc bikes you could get a better bang for your buck with new ones other than a used one).

My Ninja I had for a year. I sold it for 600 less than I bought if for, and it needed:
-A new Tire
-New Brakes(maybe)
-Full scheduled maintenance
(NOTICE: I kept my bike pristine, but many other people may not break in a bike properly, not change the fluids or lie about accidents).

Novaz, have your dad read the many, many, threads that are on this forum about good first bikes and why an R6 or gixxer is not a good first bike. I can't imagine that your dad would ever want to put you in harm's way and that's exactly what he'd be doing. Ask him if he would've bought you a brand new nascar race car right after you got your driver's license. If he won't go online to read the threads, print them out for him and leave it out for him to read... good luck!

stick them in hisd newspaper if he doesnt want to take the time to read them. or if he is a business man, put them in his briefcase. and if he still refuses to get a used bike, just get a new smaller bike.

Well thanks guys and girls for all the replys, I dont mind sharing a little about my life and why im still at home with my parents. When I was 18 I had been producing music for about 5 years and when i graduated i had no intentions to go to college because I was really good at producing and was schdueled to go to new york city and sign a distribution deal with Def Jam Recording(Used to be owned by Russell Simmons). But in a creul twist of fate, God stepped in and i dedicated my life to the Lord. Now basically having no other options i started to figure out what i could do in college because i wouldnt produce music that did not represent God. However what occured next was even worse then anything, I got a tonsil infection which got so bad i couldnt do anything for an entire year. Because of the infection spreading from my tonsils to my muscles in my neck i was on and off working and attending school. Just recently things started to turn around Im finally healed of the infection but so much time has passed in my life. If you asked me do I wish i never got sick and worked hard so i could be out of my house the answers YES. But i cant make excuses cry and fall over, i just have to deal with my reality and work hard well i gotta run thanks for you guys advice

Have him talk to the dealer about bikes and if a gsxr is a good first bike... The dealer told me straight away that it was not...

Yeah, but some dealers are scumbags - they just want to push bigger bikes because they make more money on them. Don't let dealers decide what's good for you! 8)

When I went from my ninja 500 to the gsxr 600, I couldn't believe how many times my dealer warned me over and over. "Remember this is MUCH MORE of a bike than your last." I think he said that at least 5 times during my whole sale.

The dealer most definately will give you good advice. Just try to get a mature looking dealer, not the 21 year old that's like, "What? You've never driven a dirtbike or anything? Dude, you'll be fine with a 750 as your first bike."

I'd go for the Katana 600 or even 750. It's a very good looking bike and isn't as twitchy as the super sport bikes. Although I find it hard to believe that your father is actually telling you that you'll get a supersport or nothing, the Katana is an impressive enough looking bike that it should satisfy him.

Of course, it's a lot heavier than the GS500 you were considering. However, even the Katana 750 has 23 less horsepower than a gixxer 600 and weighs 95 pounds more, so would be a preferable first bike in my opinion. It'll have plenty of power for doing anything short of keeping up with the gixxers in the straightaways and it will get you lots of admiring looks from the ladies. The rear seat is a lot bigger as well, so the women will want rides on it a lot more than they would a gixxer, which has a rear seat that is about 5 inches long... :)

Can you not do like they do over here?
In UK if you are over 21 you can learn on bikes up to 600cc but after you pass your test for 2 years + while learning the bike has to be restricted to a certain bhp (33 i think). Could you buy a cbr, zxr or gsxr and restrict it for a year or so until you think you are ready.

Phease-
We don't have restrictions on power for beginners but there are a few while on a learners permit, for a few months. 1. No Passengers. 2. No Nighttime riding. .3 No Highway riding. If you live in a state with no helmet law, you can ride with a pair of sunglasses and some boxer briefs and be legal. . I've heard in Florida, that you're not required to get insurance if you plan to ride with a helmet. Yea that makes sense.

I quite like the restrictions here for first time riders, helmets are law to be worn, but on L plates you can't take passengers or ride on motorways (freeways), not sure about the nighttime riding though, oh and the power restrictions.

All i was suggesting was if novaz3 bought a race replica bike from the dealers and then asked them to put a power restriciton on it until he feels ready to free the beast and have it removed.

I feel that if you're going to be responsible enough to purchase a bike, you should be responsible enough to behave like a mature adult. Not that theres anything wrong with power restrictions or anything, but most of us don't need hand holding. Although I think that a personality screening should be required for some of these 18 year old yahoos that want to buy a litre bike for their first ride.
