Well, I had my first scary experience on a bike. I had to stop quickly at a light, and, stepped on the rear brake too hard and locked the rear wheel. I went into a skid, scared myself to death, but recovered from the whole ordeal fairly quickly. All I could see was someone having to scrape me off the pavement.

I learned a valuable lesson, that bikes dont stop like cars.

also remember that if you lock the back tire and you're going straight, keep it locked until you stop and you'll be fine. If you lock the front while going straight, ease off a bit and begin to reaplly the brakes.

i find that a good size empty parking lot was a great place for me to practice when i got my new bike just a few weeks ago

I have to agree with uncle bob about practice.
Find a quiet safe place, pick a spot on the road and when you reach it stop as fast and safe as you can,try different speeds.
Don't forget most of your braking is done with the front brake,I personally use the rear brake more for gauging road conditions when its raining and extra stopping power when I have a pillion.

I an signed up for the MSF Beginning Rider course in August, and have been reading "Proficient Motorcycling". Practicing "Panic" stops in an empty parking lot is a lot less panic inducing. Most stopping power comes from the front brake, use it always!

I experienced this with my new slippery, oiled, teflon looking tires. it was not even high speed thing. i freeking slit few meters before i stoped very close to scared old lady....

Poor lady, she just stoped in the middle of the road and with the shock she kept looking at the incoming yellow bike towards her..

Luckily no one was in front of me... or is that not as lucky... Traffic crossing the steet would have sucked more than rear ending someone.
Glad it didnt come to either of those two options.

What the hell is a rear brake?

I think it may be that little foot lever on the right that gets used once in a while to set up the rear end for a corner? Other than that, pretty useless!

Road stripes in the morning.....

Similar to watching how you stop, I have learned to be careful when you take off. There is a right turn near my house onto a main arterial. One early dewy morning I wasn't paying enough attention and drifted a little wide. Guess the rear tire was on the stripe when I grabbed more throttle... Did a little fish tail... Didn't need any coffee to wake up that morning....

It's that thing they make you step on really hard at the MSF course, and then you learn to ignore it.

Bike dont stop like cars...they stop QUICKER and much much better!!! You just need to learn how to apply them correctly... I bet most people out there have smaller rotors on their car do then a sportbike!!
