Look for body armor that contours your forearm, shoulders and spine. Good brands to look for are Joe Rocket, Alpinestars and Icon. Preferably look for anything leather or perforated leather as a lot of textiles just don't hold up as well in a crash.

LOL! He's not listening, is he?

You have various densities of foam armor and hard plastic armor. Many riders look for CE certified armor, though I couldn't find specifications on that.

Anyone have links to armor standards?

Not only the armor is important, but somehting that is often overlooked is the seams!

You can have the tougher textile and armor but if it all rips apart at the seams in the first few inches of a slide it won't help your skin much.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere.
Thanks all for the links.
I believe I've read that "CE" rated armour is what I should be looking for.
It also seems that most jackets that I've looked at has "foam" armour
in the back area. Is that a good or bad thing?
I have to get myself at a local shop to look at these jackets.

Anything is better then nothing but CE Approved is the only armor that has to meet X, Y and Z standards and appears to be the best protection. However you can replace some jackets back/spine protector with other pieces. My Shift jacket doesn't have a back pad but it does have a pouch to hold a pad. Or you can just get a strap on one. ;)

But don't over think the protection issuse too much. Stick with jackets from good brand names and you shouldn't have to worry to much. Outside of that fact just don't fall off your bike and your golden.

I'd love to see this jacket in a store to try on

CE in the elbows, arms and back and padding in the shoulder. Mesh and it's only $90!!! Looks like a great summer jacket for Florida humidity and heat.

It would be stamped on the pads themselves or a tag. This is my elbow pad, notice the white tag.

"Back Armor"
Arms and legs can be broken and heal, but if you screw up your spine,,, you know the rest.
I was at a local shop earlier today, and tried out a few textile & mesh jackets.
As Nexus suggested, dont worry about the armour. They all felt good.
The back padding felt adequate.
But I have to do another round of testing jackets when Im serious on buying, as just about all of the ones I tried on, felt way short for my torso, but then again, it was my first time trying on a MC jacket.

I know of quite a few guys on motorcycle forums with permanently damaged and missing limbs.
