Hi all. I'm a brand-new Suzuki Savage LS650P rider, as of last night. I bought a used 2002 with 1800 miles on it. It hadn't ever been serviced :shock: so I've taken it in to get the works this morning, and already miss it!

I've been riding a Yamaha Virago 250 for a couple of years now, and felt the need for a little bit more oomph and the ability to get onto the highway once in a while. So far, this seems like a great step up for me.

I rented a Buell Blast for a day, thinking that might be a good choice. What an awful excuse for a motorcycle. It vibrated more than most massage chairs set on SuperHigh, and was way less comfortable about it! The shifting was clunky and it sounded like a lawnmower on steriods. I was soooo much happier with my first ride on the Savage.

I noticed that there are different "flavors" of LS650's mentioned, but I can't seem to find what the differences are. My owners manual shows mine as a LS650P - but what makes a P different from an R? I asked the service advisor this morning, but he was clueless. I found this forum, and just know that one of you folks can clear up this curiosity for me.

Also, anything a newbie needs to know about this new bike? Any little quirks?

Congratulations! The Savage is a great bike. I have a 2004 and just love it. I saw this question discussed elsewhere. Here's what someone posted:

"read somewhere that the 'P' stands for models with the pullback bars vs. the cafe (drag? ... I don't know the correct term) bars that some of the earlier models had, and now the '05 S40 also has."

I don't know if it is true or not but it is the only theory I have heard so far.

I'd suggest you check around this forum and also check out www.suzukisavage.com. It is a very active forum focused exclusively on the Savage. If you take some time and read the old posts you'll learn a ton about your bike. Happy reading and riding!

while on the topic of whats in a name, what the hell does gsx-r stand for? or even just the ol' GSs? i know the r stands for racing. i was thinking something like general suzuki X? its like those emerald nuts commercials...

Well, BMW used the term G/S for "Gelande/Strasse" or "Forest/Street" for its R80GS's and R100GS's and was the rival to Suzuki's GS850 around the late 1970's early 1980's.

But, I do not not for sure about the GSX-R's.
